Hawthorn missed the finals for 5 years in a row leading to their 2008 flag, so it's a bit misleading to say they didn't need a rebuild to win a flag.

They sustained their premiership run by savvy free agent acquisitions and trades, mostly driven by players wanting to jump onto a glamourous winning team. They are decidedly middle of the road now, having missed the finals last year, and maybe only squeaking in this year.

Actually, I remember the Hawks from 2004 - 2007, and that was a rebuild. I admired them at the time because they played some beautiful footy, but were inconsistent. You'd watch them one week and think they were premiership material, and then they'd get thumped the following week. Also the umps hated them. If I remember rightly, the had some luck in the draft as well.

Interesting fact: Hawthorn have only taken three picks in the first round in the last decade, being Shoenmakers (2008), Smith (2010) and Burton (2015). The rest they've traded to bring in established players.

Freo has copped some criticism for some of its picks late in the first round since Lyon arrived. Seems like the better play was to just trade them rather than take your chances at that range. Hawthorn, a bit like Freo, has got better value from its later picks.

In 2001 the Hawks got Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell and Campbell Brown. In 2003 they got Roughhead, Franklin and Lewis (with picks 2, 5 and 7). After that you really don't have to be so lucky.
