So there’s no reason to report anyone unless the umpire is harmed?

The umpire wasn't threatened or intimidated. It was a conversation that involved human contact.

It's a classic case of continually making bad decisions to justify a previous over reaction.

Obviously a "don't touch the umpires at all ever" rule is very simple, but is it necessary? In a game notorious for wooly, malleable rule interpretations, why does this one have to be zero tolerance?

A player can punch another player in the face and everyone starts fretting over the minutiae of intent, force, blah blah blah, and meanwhile a friendly pat on the back or tug on the sleeve of an umpire is strictly verboten. I find it odd.

As Shane says, and this is one of my least favourite things in the world, it's a case of trying to justify overreach. Rather than admit you went overboard, you double down.

I think the "don't touch the umpire ever" rule should stand. Leave no grey areas, and make it the 1 rule in the game which is easy to adjudicate.

There is a difference between approaching an umpire and laying hands on him, and collisions in play. We don't want to see footy go the way of soccer where players rush in and manhandle the ump every time the whistle goes.

No touch the umpire has more meaning from watching on the sidelines of the Juniors than the bigs.

I hate to say it B1R1, but the bigs are role models for the rest of us.

People who think manhandling and threatening another person, let alone an umpire, is ok are probably not going to worry about what AFL footballers do.

You only have to look at Trumps mates to see that I guess.
