When she first started (Channel 10 I think), I wasn't a fan of Kelli Underwood, but now I think she is a very good game caller — I think she suffered from the 'no women' policy (unstated, of course).
Enjoy hearing her on the radio — a good strong voice, and calls it as she sees it.
As for whether callers should tell us what's happening, I'm a bit in the 'prefer descriptive' camp — the proliferation of 'personnel' (five and six of them for goodness' sake) — has done nothing for commentary, especially when they set off to talk about their pet topics/interests/shoe size and make no observations about developments on-field in front of them.

Best caller of all time was John Arlott (cricket commentator) Possibly matched by Richie Benaud as far 'listenability' is concerned.

Once when watching a Kiwi bowler named Bob Cunis, Arlott descibed in these terms:

“And, as for Cunis, his bowling, like his name, was neither one thing nor the other."

You're not in the same league if you can't produce output like that

Wally Foreman, George and Kim Hughes. Good honest description of the game, a bit of parochial indignation and fraternal love, and some comedy on the side. What more could you want?

Personally, I enjoyed Malcolm Blight's second stint at commentary, after his short tenure at the Saints. He didn't bother to hide his complete disdain for the modern game. I can remember him saying once or twice that he found the game he was commentating on quite boring. One of the few times Bruce was stuck for words. Hilarious.

Yeti, I couldn't agree more, that era of John Arlott, Brian Johnston and Alan McGillivray on 6WF in the 60's and 70's were great childhood memories. It was compelling listening.

I tend to leave the sound off and decide for myself what is happening. But sometimes the commentators surprise me with what they notice...

There was an English lady commentating the Ashes on ABC this year. She was the best I have heard in decades. Name?
