Who is the best football TV caller going around?

Its not a Melbourne Cup field by any stretch - but I think Dwayne Russell gets the chocolates. Is there anyone else?

If Sandy Roberts could pronounce Fremantle correctly then he'd be well in front.

Totally agree Hypen. Dwayne’s more often than not objective, easily understood, doesn’t play favourites or drool over some players aka Bruce nor play the idiot. Surprising to me, in a recent survey of favourites Dwayne rated very low.

Bruce - overly fawning style and too familiar drooling approach with some ‘stars’ His manufactured ‘eh’ makes me almost puke.
BT - I don’t mind BT as he more often than not adds some humour to a good call, although what’s humorous is a subjective thing, eh Bruce?
Eddie - slimy and he’s manufactured his own slime over many years. Nothing more to say.
Anthony Hudson-Sticks to the facts without a manufactured/false approach.
Basil-well he’s Perth’s Chanel Eagle CEO....what’s there to add.

Please no women commentators for the men’s game......protective shield up.

Yeah. You need a penis to be able to describe sport.

My view is that there are too many boofhead radio commentators calling games on TV. BT is a perfect example of a poor-man's Rex Hunt who has been given the primetime TV slot for reasons I don't quite understand.

My preference for commentators is the same as for umpires - I prefer the ones I don't notice. Give me a commentator who doesn't think it's all about them, and I'll generally be happy.

I don't mind Anthony Hudson for that reason. I was also fan of Jason Bennett, who calls VFL games but filled in when Bruce was covering the Commonwealth Games. Russell is ok.

I know they weren't too popular on here, but Bruce and Dennis in their prime about 5-10 years ago were pretty good.

I must admit, when I watch other sports like US broadcasts or soccer, or even the rugby and Tour, the quality of the calling relative to AFL commentators is very noticeable.

I enjoyed Peter Landy's work during the Winter Olympics.

Whatever turns you on. For me it’s, nothing against women, I’m 60 years old, married with daughters.
It’s more the dislike of the high pitched commentary, which goes great with a screaming netball crowd.

Callers who try too hard to inject their personality into their work need to be sent into a small dark room to listen to 1000 hours of Richie Benaud and Martin Tyler, may they both rest in peace. By focusing totally on describing the game, for the benefit of the viewer, guys like that actually become part of it.

Which is what the wangs who just shout about the game and trade injokes want to do, but never will.

Dwayne lost me when he began pronouncing Son Son's name as Michael Waltersstagesforfree, when in fact Sonny was being driven into the ground having hardly possessed the ball. Adelaide game.

Whatever happened to Phil Liggett?

I'd take any of the women involved over all of the men at the moment because they don't try to blow your tv speakers out injecting 'excitement' into something I can see and understand for myself.

As for high pitch... see above.

Football commentators get off easy because the most common comparison is cricket commentators - and they get progressively worse year-on-year.

I’m a big NBA fan and my favourite commentator is Doris Burke. She knows the game (she played at a high level in college) is whip smart, is a total pro and is a wonderful, sensible counterpoint to some of the more braggadocious male callers. I don’t think we’ve got anyone like that yet in AFL circles, but that probably has more to do with opportunity than anything.

As for high-pitched calling, I reckon that would rule out Nick Dal Santo immediately.

Dunno about commentators but I’d rule out Bruce and Basil purely because they annoy me.

Becoming a fan of Daisy Pearce on the special comments - very professional imo.
