With Apeness and Cox we don't get outmarked under the high ball. Cox because of his skill and Apeness his competitiveness. Outmark Apeness and he'll make you pay. He's a ripper.

I must commend some of you for finding a reason to be dissatisfied by our ten goal win in Melbourne. West Coast beat them by two goals.

Neale brilliant. Ryan, Hamling and Langdon future all Australian players. Brad Hill, Walters, Pearce and Taberner to come in.

Shane, I think the reason we scored a lot of goals (in the first half) from turnovers, is because Carlton turned the ball over a lot. A lot more than a lot actually. And they turned it over a lot in our forward half, so we were always going to score a lot of goals from turnovers yesterday. So I would not read to much into that stat.

On Neale, I thought his disposal yesterday, particularly in the first half was better than it has been for a couple of years. He took good options and hit those targets, rather than just lobbing the ball forward in hope.

To be fair on Neale, with the forward line or lack thereof, lob and hope seems to have been the main option for a couple of years.

The turnover thing is perplexing to me. Lets say that the ball goes back and forth up and down and across the ground for a few minutes with neither side scoring. Then one one side does finally score, it must be from a turnover - because at some point their opposition last had the ball, and lost it, and the goal was scored.
So the only goals that don't follow a turnover are goals where there is a centre bounce followed by a a string of possessions and a goal without the opposition getting their hands on the ball.
So basically most goals are turnover goals.

I came into it somewhere into the start of the 3rd quarter after keeping up with scores on the phone.

It was jolly exciting knowing the team named had shoved a cattle prod at Carlton and herded them into a sorting yard so I was keen to sit back and enjoy the show for the second half.

It's good to see young players responding to selection with solid performances, right across the board. You can contrast some of their efforts with a more careless approach from some seniors who can be wasteful... so you'd want to see effort like that rewarded.

it's also good to see a functioning forward line. I mean... a functioning forward line fercryinoutloud. Apeness is stepping up bigly and I like how he crashes packs. Brennan Cox could be a star. The thought of him and Tabs working in tandem? Biglyfying.

Yeah, it was 'only Carlton' and they've got serious issues but Freo hammered them. I'd have liked to see them go on and bury them but a win's a win. Doing it without Pearce was impressive.

More than that though, is the ongoing question about the style of game Freo are playing. Do we expect to see more of that serious forward line approach in future? Are we going to see more direct play through the corridor where possible?

We've got some talent in the playing group. Yeah, 'only Carlton' but Freo can play. There's going to be reasons for failing but I don't think these players deserve being labelled as not good enough after the last couple of games. They're good enough to have a decent crack. I want to see more of it.

Carlton didn’t seem to apply much pressure to us which suited our young team.
They reminded me of us not long ago

We've got plenty of talent, but when you are playing a good team putting on enormous pressure you need your whole team making good, split-second decisions and executing skills. It helps to have a bail out kick long to a target, which we also haven't had.

Yesterday there was very little pressure applied by Carlton, and a couple of bail out options forward who could create a contest. When we play really good teams we'll probably look ordinary again because we don't quite have the strength, composure and quality from end-to-end - watching Richmond right now, there's no way we're good enough to withstand their pressure. But that will come with time and more cohesion.

I'd love to see CamMac playing next to Apeness and Cox. I reckon he'd be a different player.

McCarthy is easily the Dockers' most talented key forward. That's why the club went to extraordinary lengths to recruit him in 2016 and 2017, loudly supported by almost everyone on Dockerland (from memory the CamMac thread during the 2016 trade period ran to over 30 pages). However, he has a brittle psyche. Put him alongside any two of Taberner, Cox and Apeness and you'll see a vastly different player.

Morgan,

Carlton put more pressure on in the second half which was reflected in the scoring. Mind you, had we kicked straight we would have outscored them still but the difference was as you say, the lack of pressure. Thats why I'm not getting all worked up over how we went other than it was enjoyable.

The upside for me was the clear indication that the core of the squad is AFL standard and with the right structures and tactics, we WILL do better than we have displayed so far. Having two talls forward (which has been called for by a number on here) will actually work. We have Taberner, Cox and Apeness that can go forward and be effective marking targets. We can have Mundy and Fyfe filling both inside mid and marking half forward roles and we have Ballas, Walters and Matera who can crumb effectively off the taller blokes.

We should have faith in these guys to get the job done by keeping a functioning forward structure. All the hand wringing that has been directed at the squad as not being good enough has not been true. The squad is better than some on here have been saying.

Just about everybody has enjoyed having a functioning forward line, especially myself and we should stick with it even against the good sides. Yes, we will get scored against but gradually we will improve to the point where that will become uncommon. These blokes will grow into those roles if we let them.

edit: Fully agree on CamMac. He has shown himself to be a terrific third tall. Asking him to be the sole tall forward has been unfair. Stand him next to Cox and Apeness next game and I wouldn't be surprised to see him get 2 or 3 goals. Thats what he was good at at GWS and he hasn't lost his talent just his form

With you on that RR, you score from a stoppage or a turnover. What else is there?

Scoreboard pressure will put Richmond to the sword as much as any other team in the comp. I have seen them struggle a few times in the last 2 years when the game is not played on their terms. That is what we need. A different attack on each team we play. Take the initiative, those young fellas have loved it in the last 2 weeks because they have spent most of their time doing what they do best. Attack. Don't react, ACT.

Make those good sides accountable for their game and they are not invincible, give our mids a couple of targets up front so that they can get the ball forward under pressure instead of turning it over on the wing. That is what worked the last 2 weeks In the first half yesterday, even though Carlton had plenty of players inside our 50, our forwards moved to create space for a teammate to kick into. Kersten in particular was prepared to kick to those spaces coz he knew someone would be running into them.
