TOPIC: State of the Game

I don't know about the rest of you but I find AFl increasingly hard to watch. Apparently so do some others:
"Seven’s Saturday Night Football drew 96,000 fewer viewers than Agatha Christie’s the Witness for the Prosecution. Seven’s Friday night telecast fared a little healthier but was still outdone by the Better Homes and Gardens".

Hasn't Channel 7 always known this though. There's a reason they delayed the Friday night game to 8:30 prior to being able to show it on 7Two. Better Homes and Gardens rates better.

Yeah, but Witness for the Prosecution was an absolute cracker!

The AFL is in big trouble if Friday night ABC telly is a more entertaining option.

Wait, that's a real article?

I assumed it was satire from a Tim Lane parody account.

To compete with Better Homes and Gardens, maybe we should implement Better Umpires and Commentators.

I remember Poms called French unclean as they stopped using soap
it turned out that the French had moved to using shower gel !
So are 7's ratings representative of football viewing !!
How many now watch on Fox, or the live App, or watch AFL live over seas!
I for one are watching more footy than in the last 15 years because it is now more available.
Admittedly I can't get better homes and gardens, which is a shame

The footy is not fun at all. I am just programmed after 40 years to sit down and watch it and that I do. I last about a quarter these days. I watched the rugby on Saturday and just turned the TV off on Friday night and talked to family members. Look, I am not saying anyone should take such drastic action as speaking to family members there are always other things to do but you take my point - that Saints v Sydney game was shocking.

There is one or two good games a round and that's it.

Good point PurpleThai. I actually watch all my footy on Watchafl.afl.com.au and have been watching more than I would have if commercial tv was my only choice.

I suppose you have to look at the bigger picture. Footy as a metaphor for society. And how is society going? Well in some ways, just like footy. We are richer, healthier and live longer than ever before, and footy players are faster, stronger and more skillful than ever before.

And yet, rich as we are, some bits just don't seem to be working well. Its hard to put your finger on it, but perhaps its just the relentless pace of change that leaves us feeling as though something is not quite right. A vague fear that it is all just a house of cards ready to collapse with one stray gust of wind. And as individuals, we have every reason to feel less secure, like underpaid casual tightrope walkers with a dodgy looking safety net.

And footy suffers from too much change. The players change clubs too often. And the AFL thinks its a good idea for there to be an opportunity to change clubs mid-season. Why not have a weekly draft? Some of us loved a bit of spite or ill-feeling in a game. But these days its mainly for show. The players all know each other and know that they may be at a different club next season, so there is little genuine animosity. Footy is supposed to be tribal. Its stylized warfare. But just shake an imaginary spear these days and people are all upset.

The rules change officially every year, and unofficially several times a week. The tribunal doesn't accept precedent, so its decisions seem a bit random at times. And the club administrators, restless at their desks, decide on a regular basis to review the jumper, the song, the game day experience. And hanging over all this is money. Everything is designed to make money. One can't help but feel that the AFL, if asked to decide between running a fair competition or maximising money, would take the money.

Fewer games are shown on TV, and random 3 hour delays are inserted - thanks Foxtel. The less footy you see on TV, the less likely you are to know the players from other clubs, until you only know your own players and the stars. Its moving from being an important sport to being a bit of light entertainment to compete with Survivor #35. And speaking of reality TV, do you ever wonder if its rigged?

I don't watch reality TV at all, I never really have. So I couldn't comment on it's lack of integrity. But I've become increasingly convinced that at least some of the AFL season is 'manipulated'. Back when journalism was a professional occupation, there was a rule: "If you want the real story, follow the money".

So that all boils down to ch7's ratings being down and they reckon it's football's fault?

I agree with Hypen that as a neutral there are probably about 2 or 3 good games a week.

However, sometimes when you are emotionally invested in a team, a game that isn't objectively good can be enjoyable when you win - or vice versa. I think a neutral would have enjoyed North's win over Freo as a gutsy win by a young team on the road who found a way to win in a tight contest. I hated it.

I'm not convinced that is any different to any other point in footy's history. Footy's past is always well remembered, but nostalgia is essentially a cognitive bias to protect the self-esteem of old people. Footy nostalgia is aided by the fact that in the past only the most anticipated game (or games) of the round was broadcast. Televising every game, including the obviously turgid match-ups, leads people to think footy is worse that it used to be.

If you went and saw every film that was released, you'd quickly form the view that cinema isn't what it used to be. Are modern films better or worse than in the 'golden era' of Hollywood, or in the 80s? Who knows? But the best new films are wonderful and are at least as good as the classics.

The same is true of footy.

Young people tend to think that music in the 80's was amazing cause today radio stations play the Knack's and Flock of Seagulls' only hit songs. Let me assure you kids "I Ran" was as good as it got in 1982.

The rest was plain Feargel Sharkey.

Wasn't it Smiley.
