The thing is the better teams this year are playing a less
congested style of play. Yes they still get numbers back and pressure the opposition hard when they don’t have the ball but they are always anticipating the turnover and then spread to attacking positions at the right time.

They kick nice and long to leading forwards with the little blokes at their feet. Very effective and exciting to watch. This forces the opposition to panic and try and clog up the backline which only serves to stop a few goals whilst severely comprimising the ability to score at the other end.

I reckon to be a good team these days you need to be able to defend hard for short periods when required but for the majority of the game be attacking in bursts, even if this results in a bit of a shootout. There is no doubt we are very good at defending but the dam walls burst eventually and it can never be sustained.

It is simply too easy to coach against Freo at the moment. We are too predictable and the opposition have had about 10 years to figure out how to slice through our game plan.

Yes, KK, the two key things - have a solid defence, and have the ability to break out of that defence really quickly and get a goal. The key for me is not wasting effort. When you go forward it has to be really hard and fast, with lots of players running in waves so that the opposition can't stop you. Ten really speedy intense attacks are worth 20 or 30 slow build ups, at least in the way footy is played right now.
Interestingly enough the Bullies, a couple of years ago, were really good at stopping teams on the counter attack. Somehow they just managed to get enough players running back hard enough to break it down.
