TOPIC: Football arc

A new 25 metre arc from the goal, 6 blokes inside the 25 and 6 inside the 50 at each and a goal semi circle are part of the ‘plan’ to improve the game. I’m waiting for the flashing goal posts before I make a judgement.

They’ve just let the game get too fast, fix that by reducing your interchanges and that may be a good starting point.

I agree Noddy. Reducing interchanges down to 40 a game, or only after goals, seems to have a good chance of reducing congestion without changong the fabric of the game too much.

It could be counterproductive as others here have pointed out, in that it could encourage selection of more mid-sized runners at expense of KPPs, and encourage flooding.

But it's worth a try before implementing more radical changes.

Money runs the game. As stated by the head of Seven West, the AFL needs more goals so Channel 7 can run more ads - he reckons the ads are the most important 30 seconds in the game. Weirdly I’d prefer to watch the game.

Eliminate the interchange.

And the goal posts.

Maybe you're not ready for flashing goal posts. It's more of a Shelbyville idea.

The possibilities are endless. Personally there's not enough strobing stuff going on, especially when we are getting flogged.

Centre squares, interchange bench, 50m arc and now another arc and a semi circle....and 4 umpires.....strewth!

I've not read or seen anything on the subject yet but Gerard Whately was going on in his usual chief librarian at a Girls' School manner the other night about a presentation he'd seen from the committee charged with looking into things. Something to do with rules... or 'freeing up the game'.

One of the things he mentioned was a painstaking review of every change to the rules of the game and the ensuing shift in style that it caused. Apparently they admit that basically since Demetriou, so AD then, everything amounts to tinkering. Apparently it's a 'very good, very impressive' presentation... never good news if you've ever sat in on a Powerpoint extravaganza really, which promises effective change based on solid research.

And they come up with this sh*t?

they're not even trying to pretend anymore.

I'm a bit worried about this idea of interchanges only after a goal. We could regularly go for a quarter without an interchange at all and quite often with less than ten for a game.

I've got an idea. Why don't those clubs that are interested, split from the AFL, and form an Australian Rules Football league. I don't understand this game anymore.

For me a bigger problem is the lack of competitiveness or plainly put the lack of close games.

Can't wait for Saints v Sydney tonight. Geez. There's too many mediocre teams and too many crap teams.

Another thing is the lack of high scores in games. Half the game is scragging and stoppage work trying too get a handball out to initiate some actual play. There are many good things which we have lost under the Vic administration of the game, including kicking for goal, players often generally too knackered from running to execute this well, and one on one contests are rare.

Watch the really early AFL games, the umpires grabbed the ball and threw it straight up at a stoppage. No fluffing around, checking who the ruck man is, showing which way they will back out etc.

They went back to it a few years ago and I thought it looked good. Now they probably spend an extra 5-10 seconds per stoppage to get it going again. That is enough time for Roly's forward line to run 50 meters towards defence and congest the stoppage. And so on and so forth to where we are now.

Ball it up quickly and let the play flow and you won't have a problem with congestion.
