That's a nice sentiment but I think it's a long bow. I think Winmar is a bloke with a pretty good opinion of himself, who is proud of what he did and would like a statue of it in a prominent place. There's nothing wrong with that but the people who make decisions about putting up statues should look at a bigger picture than what the bloke the statue is of would like.

My loosely related point is that a statue often says more about the people who put it up than the event itself. It would please a lot of people to put up something that represented a good moment in the fight against racism, and it should, but that doesn't mean that it's the right statue in the right spot. You don't start by building statues first and then finding somewhere to plonk them second. You start by deciding whether you want a statue.
