TOPIC: Salary Cap

wingman Salary Cap 5 years 10 months ago #1

If Sandi, Mundy, Johnson, Balla & Pearce and possibly Spur all finish this year and taking into consideration only Fyfe being on big dollars you would think the piggy bank would be overflowing before reaching anywhere near the salar cap. Maybe Sonny is on a fair amount but wouldn't think anyone else is over 400 to 500k. Add to that a few delistings and I would be throwing the cheque book at Mcgovern with a long term (6yrs) 1.1m contract, front ended. We've tried unsussessfully to get a player of his marking power before and failed so why not go after someone that at least supported the club.

Then offer the Crows Neale for his brother and also pay him a little over what he is currently contracted at. Add those 2 to the existing group and build from there. If unsuccessful at least they will bleed down the road.

You're depressing me.

Remember when after Round 11 people were still able to talk about what we needed to do to make the 8 (or top 4 for a little while). Now it's draft and trade talk from April to December.

Seriously, Shane.

By now you should be getting used to Freo putting the spoon away before the mid season bye. No good waiting till the last minute

I’ll have a ping. We’re two games out of the 8 and play Adelaide at home then the worst and second worst team in the competition the following fortnight. Win all three and we’re back in the hunt...for just missing the finals.

But on this topic, the McGoverns are very good but overrated. Trade back into the draft, and open the chequebook only for players that really move the needle.

I'll agree with your comments on trading back into the draft and opening the chequebook for genuine good players.

I even agree with your comments on the McGoverns. When they play us, we make them look better than they really are.

Beating Adelaide? Carlton? Brisbane? Of those, we play Adelaide at the craypot but I see them as clear favourites , especially after Roly has put the shutters. Carlton is a 50 / 50 at best as they've put in some credible performances recently and have won games against the same teams we won games against. They are not that bad and being an away game, they're a good chance.

Brisbane? We'll go in favourites because Brisbane travel poorly but again, they haven't been all that bad recently.

We could easily lose all 3, especially if we put in the kind of performance we put in for the first 3 quarters against Collingwood and some of our other recent games.

If we win 8 in a row we're right in the mix.

The problem with an underperforming team is that you'd think all the players would be cheap, but they won't be. Take some of our current crop, stick them in a winning side, and their value goes up. You can't underpay them too much, or they'll be like Cerra and hold off on signing their contract.

I get a strong feeling the only thing the club is hunting for is an early draft pick. I’ve got Gold Coast and the Bullies going past us. We’ll finish 15th.

RR has a point-
If only we could loan our crap players to good teams (EPL style) they would substanially increase their trade value.

We can't play against ourselves, Morgan. Though, I suspect there's more than a little bit of playing with ourselves going on.

I think the club should go very hard for Lynch. Offer thirty percent more than the next club. I still think we would fail to land him but Lynch and Taberner in the same forward line would go some ways to solving our (many) problems.

Also would add that I read Hogan being interviewed on the afl app the other day. That is a bloke not going anywhere.

Hogan has moved his mum to Melbourne.

He wouldn't do that if he had any intentions of moving back here in the short term. Even more so now the MFC is a likely finalist this year and potentially aiming at the big one in the next 2 - 3 years
