Must have watched a different game. My two daughters and I voted unanimously around the couch that Kersten was worse on ground. Slow, cumbersome, fumbly, surely not able to keep up with any key forward. At least the Fist had closing speed.

I seriously think Hamling, Logue and Pearce are all in front of him as proper defenders due to their pace and agility. I would also hazard that Johnno and Duman are also in front of him and probably even Ethan Hughes. With Ryan, Nyhuis, Wilson, Hill and Blakely all vying for part of the back 6 (7) I cant envision a position for Kersten back there, even with Johnnos impending retirement.

Thats why it was so strange that he be reinvented as a defender. Why not stay with the original invention as a forward given thats where our real need is, more so since Tabs went down and McCarthy has lost all confidence. His one skill is straight kicking so play him forward close to goals where his few possessions can be made the most of.

This experiment hasnt worked.

You can only look at what he did in terms of the team performance. A bunch of young guys getting picked off at random. It wouldn't have been a nice experience for the players. They will get better and enjoy the wins.

Unfortunately Shane didn't look comfortable down back and often made poor decisions. He was slow both with and without the footy and that is no good when switching or trying to get the ball out of defence.

For some reason he seemed to be the go to for those horrible chip kicks backwards and sideways where we'd go from the wing into our own defensive 50m before turning it over. I don't mind that tactic if you move with speed to a free player who can run and dispose of the footy well like a Ryan, Wilson or Hill but when it's Kersten, Hamling and APearce, it's a mistake.

That was where Kersten received at least half of his possessions while getting towelled up the other way. Duman played a much better game down back and I can see potential although he is that in-between size which can be tough to find a good match up for and those that drafted Logue will want him in the side instead so they can justify their list management strategies.

The switch! We are the masters of switching play for no advantage. I get that it's to open up play and give a quick avenue out of attack. But what's the point in it when you switch and often switch back for no purpose at all.
We're so slow and predictable with it that other teams know what we will do and cover it easily..
And yes there is no point in doing it anyway unless you're giving it to someone with a bit of pace who is going to take the opposition on.

Stating the bleeding obvious - Sandilands back for Apeness or Jones. Matera will come in for Giro. Blakely will play midfield for Fyfe and Hughes will come in down back for Blakely. Kersten will hold his spot and play forward.
Because I'm not sure of Brad Hill's situation I have not included him in the changes, but he's the obvious replacement for Sheridan. I hope Alex Pearce is ready to go.
