TOPIC: Freo v Collingwood

Interesting that Lyon seemed to defend his coaching in the presser by insisting they held their nerve and only played 6 back despite losing the centre clearances. Almost as if he has heard the incessant criticism on this board about loading the back line.

Ive noticed this before, for instance playing the kids. When the crescendo gets loud enough it eventually makes it back to him and they do it.

I see just now they will challenge the Fyfe decision, despite lots on here saying they wouldnt.

Of course its not ideal that it takes weeks of what we can readily see before Freo do anything about it.

I reckon they are pretty much doing what we need them to do now. ie playing the kids, not always loading the back line, trying to keep a forward structure, play two rucks, have some height forward.

Last piece of the puzzle now is to re introduce the attacking play off half back. Stuff that Wilson, Hill and Ryan did on instinct during all our wins last year and this year. I saw Fyfe at half back kick into the centre to Brayshaw in the last quarter. It was a great attacking release kick that should have seen Brayshaw rush forward instinctively and put it to a half forwards advantage. Instead he never even looked further afield. He saw someone on the other half back flank free and just kicked it there. Moments later it got turned over and another Pie goal.

I saw Fyfe discussing something with Brayshaw immediately after the siren and I think he was telling him he should have had a go. Great leadership. Brayshaw nodded in agreement. Problem is, this should be drilled in by the coaching staff and not left to the players or skipper. I wish we could be confident this is happening, like all Cats fans know darn well Scott tells them to attack through the corridor at all times.

At the moment all I see if players second guessing themselves as to what they should do. Change that around and I think we will see great improvement.

BTW also noticed during game Wilson having a go at someone, did anyone see who? Perhaps someone who was at the game may know.

I think Wilson was having a go at the Freo player who did not fill the hole in front of the leading Pies player who had just marked the footy.

As for the idea of changing coaches mid-rebuild, when do you decide a coach is not doing his job? Is it the players fault that we have too many inexperienced players at the moment, don't forget it is the coaching policy that has worn out the experienced players, not fed in young players a few at a time, and left us with 4 players of over 100 or so games in the team.

Gee, how did those 4 players slip through the policy and get those 100 games?

I want names... and answers...

Players having a go at each other is a weekly occurrence now and to me a sign of unhappiness and frustration at a club.

Not a good sign.

Just poor planning by the club from 2013 onwards. They had an ageing list back then. Pav , sandy and others were in their 30's and the club acted as it was going on forever.
The club and maybe all AFL clubs are too insular. Freo simply over estimated their list and their performances. The club simply does not have a common sense check that could have lessened the rebuild impact.
They made a similar mistake after the 2006 preliminary final where they thought that they had a list to take them to the grand final.
Is it R lyon';s fault , who really knows . Maybe he has too much say in direction. The truth is it probably lies with more than Ross. Throw in bond and co and there is probably more likely the truth.
A poor board to really question some awful recruiting practices, a less than stellar injury management history, Poor skills coaching or philosophy of not giving it enough importance have all contributed.
There is no guarantee this rebuild will go anywhere. Surely even freo supporters have seen the club rebuild many times to be only shown a glimpse of success.
The club is simply substandard in its decision making. It is that simple. It does not read correctly where the game is going. We are a bottom 8 club over our journey of 25 years with hiccups of some success. That's the facts that stare us in the face. Don't need to any look further to our brothers down the road or see how Nth Melbourne made some really tough decisions 2 years ago to see what is happening know. A club with no resources, not a huge supporter base but over the last 25 years have still managed to give their supporters some sustained success.

Harvey was a Sheedy Mk II and if he was a good coach he would have been picked up by now. We made the correct decsion then, went for someone with better credentials than what we had and got us to a GF with no world beaters.

The problem isnt the coach or his knowledge of leadership or coaching, its that at this point in time he hasnt got a squad of the calibre that a coach needs to play competitively and consistently to ....but we're better placed than a lot of clubs list wise barr possibly one or two players ....a big forward and mid to support Fyfe. Id sack Bond before Lyon.

We're getting knocked around away, which given the young list isnt surprising.

Somewhere within 2014-2016 there should have been a premiership. At least one.

There are a number of reasons why this didn’t happen but player quality is low on this list.

2013 GF. We had Mayne as CHF, Sutcliffe on a HFF, Spurr on a HBF and Clarke and 211 who could barely take a mark between them. Mayne, Sutcliffe and Clarke are exactly the players that should be very good players for us now.....it was an average group that overachieved due to good coaching.

uhhh Noddy,

after Freo shafted him, Harvey said he wouldn't take a head coach role again. So your point about him being picked up is off the mark and irrelevant. You know, like RoLy's coaching.

Without the kiddy stuff........Harvey wasn’t up to the standard required for an AFL lead coach and I think he knew it as did other clubs.

That's subjective... you're conflating to try and support your defense of Lyon.

St Kilda are really struggling and have been since Lyon left. They fell off a cliff as well once they realised they had to start turning over the list and have never recovered.

I see many similarities between us and them unfortunately. Is this a coincidence?

I have no doubt that Ross can coach a good team to perform well. I'm just not sure he can develop young players to reach their potential. One hopes that if this is a deficiency he has, then he is smart enough to rectify it. After all, he is the head coach, he doesn't have to do everything.
