Interesting that Lyon seemed to defend his coaching in the presser by insisting they held their nerve and only played 6 back despite losing the centre clearances. Almost as if he has heard the incessant criticism on this board about loading the back line.
Ive noticed this before, for instance playing the kids. When the crescendo gets loud enough it eventually makes it back to him and they do it.
I see just now they will challenge the Fyfe decision, despite lots on here saying they wouldnt.
Of course its not ideal that it takes weeks of what we can readily see before Freo do anything about it.
I reckon they are pretty much doing what we need them to do now. ie playing the kids, not always loading the back line, trying to keep a forward structure, play two rucks, have some height forward.
Last piece of the puzzle now is to re introduce the attacking play off half back. Stuff that Wilson, Hill and Ryan did on instinct during all our wins last year and this year. I saw Fyfe at half back kick into the centre to Brayshaw in the last quarter. It was a great attacking release kick that should have seen Brayshaw rush forward instinctively and put it to a half forwards advantage. Instead he never even looked further afield. He saw someone on the other half back flank free and just kicked it there. Moments later it got turned over and another Pie goal.
I saw Fyfe discussing something with Brayshaw immediately after the siren and I think he was telling him he should have had a go. Great leadership. Brayshaw nodded in agreement. Problem is, this should be drilled in by the coaching staff and not left to the players or skipper. I wish we could be confident this is happening, like all Cats fans know darn well Scott tells them to attack through the corridor at all times.
At the moment all I see if players second guessing themselves as to what they should do. Change that around and I think we will see great improvement.
