It’s no good being a one dimensional player in today’s AFL. With all the injuries Apeness have had, he couldn’t do what he does best and that’s rucking. In fact with the PCLs he’s had, that skill set has probably killed off his ruck ambitions. You blokes talk about facts and figures, trouble is you need to watch some of these guys at Peel, not the highlight reels on your PC. Perhaps stop going to Freo games and go and watch our Peel boys instead. If you’re a regular at Rushton, give yourselves a pat on the back.

So assuming Apeness plays this week in the ruck will he hold his spot when Sandilands returns? Lyon rarely favours playing two ruckman so if Apeness does string together a few games I assume a fair part of that would have to be spent up forward.

The alternative is he plays only as a ruckman when Sandilands isn’t playing which means we might not see much of him for the remainder of the year. I think that would be a real shame.

It's obvious that if Apeness can string more than 2 games together without being dropped or injured, he will assume Taberner's role as forward / 2nd ruck.

When finally all 5 of Sandilands, Darcy, Apeness, Taberner & McCarthy are fit it will be interesting to see who makes way for whom.

Assuming this scenario will actually exist at some point because it hasn't for weeks, months and even years.

As much as I would love to pash on about Apeness or any other fringe player the reality is that we have too many fringe players on our list. When Sandi finally falls, or when Connor Blakey is stolen by Collingwood we really become list exposed. To compound the list problem is the fact that Loony Lyon ignores the brilliant recruiting job by Lloyd and refuses to play guys in their correct positions. Mix in the fact that no one can explain Lyons game plan ( because he doesn’t have one ) and the job of recruits ( young or old ) becomes impossible. Add to THAT mix Bumbling Bond and Rhubarb Rozich and it’s not surprising that we are up that well known creek without a paddle in a leaky HMAS Lyon.

Collingwood tried using Mayne as a forward. 2 1/2 years later, he’s now buzzing around in the HB wing position. Roly is doing what all coaches do. Find flexibility in their list. Clarko played Sicily and Gunston down back last year. Sicily is now one the best HBs going. Surprise, surprise, Sicily was recruited as a forward. Ask Clarko, he’ll tell you.
