Take a closer look, Noddy, the Pies players are not better than ours, they are just better coached. Give our players the freedom that the Pies players have to engage the game as it confronts them, instead of trying to make the game play to the way their training drills say it will. This will open up the opportunities for forwards to kick goals, midfielders to kick to where forwards are (Not where play 179 says they should be) and defenders to kick it to where midfielders are.
Lyon is coaching as if he has control of a rugby or basketball, or gridiron team where there are constant opportunities for set plays to be executed. The reason why we love footy is because of it's unpredictability, and that is the reason why Lyon's coaching does not work. 1 side effect of this style appears to be the exorbitant amount of time spent on these set plays at training which leaves about 15 minutes a session for skills.
