TOPIC: C'mon

Had a few days to absorb the game and the feedback...

the first quarter was dire... from both teams. C'mon.
Although conceding control from the start and being run off the park for a while, they fought back and went into the break behind but coming back. C'mon.
From there the game was a slowly developing epic struggle as the weather got worse and the ferocity rose. It turned into a serious dogfight with both teams throwing everything at each other and from our side, resulted in an amazing passage of play that started with Langdon chasing from the defensive 50, running 100m for a tackle and turnover that led to total commitment to get the ball forward and ended up with SonSon's double dribble checkside banana spiral drop miracle goal. That was seriously good football. C'mon.
At that stage the woes of the 1st Q were a long way back in the mirror and Freo were mixing it well. Both teams had handling errors. Both teams made silly mistakes under pressure. Let me hear y'all now... C'mon.
Then Sandy biffed some bloke with his head he was that fired up and took no further part. The structure fell away a bit but they actually tried a few things, not just after that but during the earlier parts of the game. Alex Pearse got involved and started mixing things through the middle. For a while Lyon had lined up with a 6 man forward line then both teams manned up and just tried to play one on one footy. That's when we started to lose a few inches, Sandy gone, a couple of weird umpiring decisions and just bald faced good luck for the Roos meant they got a few scores late that opened the margin up...

I'm over RoLy because I don't see him having the attacking game in him to really get ahead and I think he's wasting talent waiting for the stars to align... but that game on the weekend wasn't a disaster worth tearing your hair out over. The frustrating thing here is there are enough signs to suggest a shift to lend some hope to counter the gurgling sound of water rushing into the hull.

I can't agree with too much of that, Guy.

The first quarter was terrible from both sides, thats true and lucky for us that it was. North had most of the running and scored 1 goal 8. had they made half of those shots on goal, the game would have been over in the first quarter.

As for it not being a disaster, all I can say is that it mirrored too many other similar games. We have scored 60 points or less in 5 out 10 games this year. Individually, none of them are a 'disaster'. Collectively is a different story.

You can point to an individual circumstance and say that made a difference. Sandi banging his head made a difference. Losing Walters against the Eagles made a difference. A poor decision made a difference.

There will be something in every game that somebody can point to and say it made a difference.

To be successful, you need to be able to cope with those things just like other teams can cope with those things. If we are going to be so fragile that a single untoward circumstance throws us off our game, well we will never be successful.

The final margin blowout on the weekend wasn't really caused by the odd poor umpiring call, it was caused by us not being good enough. Had the roos taken their chances, it could have a 10 goal loss not 5.

You see signs of hope where I see a repeat performance. There might be signs of hope in a one off but you can't run that line when we do the same things over and over. Thats where the angst is coming from....a failure to improve.

Yeah, I still blame that pigeon at the G against the Tigers... things just went downhill after that.

I wasn't able to watch the game on Sunday and haven't had the "cahoonas" ? to watch since.
Just talking to my son who lives in Melbourne and is a rabid "Docker", we didn't say much! He did mention heis going to the next 3 games, coming over here for the Adelaide game and then for Carlton I said' i bet Carlton are looking forward to that game! It got me thinking, when was the last time we won a game that we were'n't expected to.
We've lost plenty that we were expected to win. That joy of winning when you least expect is what keeps fans loyal.
I was a Cardies supporter back in the early 50's anda fickle little kid. The Cardies and Souths had a great rivalry in that era, but the Cardies struck a bad patch and I decided I was going to support The mighty South Fremantle from then on.It so happened that they were playing the next week. Yes, of course the Cardies won against all odds and taught me a great lesson.
BE LOYAL
Maybe next weekend?

I just don't think relentless negativity makes for good reading.

We all know that story, there's nothing new in it. Without avoiding the obvious problems, it's good to sit back and try to take note of positive signs, not just for your state of mind but also to try and get a handle on what they're trying to do.

I tried to come around more to RoLy early on, around rd 3 or 4. There were signs of something different in the way they were playing, more direct, using the corridor more, effecting rapid ball movement wherever they could. When you talk about nothing different being tried I think you've forgotten that phase they went through. Since then a few things have gone wrong and it's too easy to just write it all off. I hate the spin and all that... putting that aside and just watching the footy, looking for good things, is a good exercise. I nearly turned it off during the 1st quarter but it turned into a good game to watch. It was a good contest. We're at a stage of just looking at the scoreboard is always going to turn you bitter.

We've got good players, some of them are stars or will be soon. I'm not doing a Jezza and trying to sell you or anyone anything. I've had enough of purely negative narratives and so have others, everyone knows where we all stand so maybe we can all relax a bit and watch the players.

Its not a case of relentless negativity, its a case of frustration at talent being wasted.

If you want positives, look at the playing group.

Duman will be an excellent replacement for Johnson and I'd expect him to be listed as best 22 before the end of the season. Hamling, Pearce A (for those spell his name wrong), Wilson will be the core of our defence for a lot of years to come.

We don't have a replacement for Sandi and trying to turn forwards into ruckmen is a bit of a waste, especially when we need forwards. Not havig a replacement for Sandi isn't all bad as it means the opposition can't plan on sharking Sandi's taps.

We still have Fyfe. Anybody who can't see a positive there is worse off than blind freddy.

Neale is down on form but I'd back him to improve again. Needs to fix his kicking as he turns it over too much but fixable.

Other positives, the Hills, Tabs (as a forward not a ruck), Cox, again a good contested mark but needs work on his kicking...again, fixable.

There are so many positives but they are all in the playing group and we need somebody, anybody to make best used of them

Langdon is a ripper and having a ripping year - Fyfe aside, he's got one hand on the Doig.

Agree with most of that Yeti, but it doesn't appear from where I am standing that much is being done to fix these little skill deficiencies during the week, over the last 5 years. That is where we fall down. That is why a Menegola can go from Freo to the Cats and suddenly improve, why a De Boer can go to GWS and maintain his spot. These teams take players and work on their skills, rather than spend all week trying to drill game plans into them (game plans that are redundant, and even more so when you don't equip the players implementing them with the skills they need to implement them, a never ending vortex to the bottom).

The big disappointment on Sunday was not losing Sandi, the reversals against Mundy and Banfield, the shocking couple of free kick blunders in the last 15 minutes. It was the fact that, like so many other times over the last 5 years, we had a team down, and only had to attack the game to put them away in the first and early in the second quarter, but we didn't. Until we try and win games by scoring more than the opposition rather than stop them from scoring more than us, we will be left open to miracle reversals of fortune, and sides coming back from the dead against us.
