I think everyone is hankering for the good old days when we would have stunning wins that no one expected followed by pathetic losses that no one expected. The old days when losing a final brought a standing ovation from the faithful. The scintillating form of 2006, where we beat the eventual premiers twice during the season.
But then came 2013, the GF, and the belief that we'd suddenly become a powerhouse club. And the first 8 games of 2015. And then winning the minor premiership that year, only to be knocked out of the finals by the umpires (with a little help from Hawthorn). Expectations were through the roof.
Then 2016 arrived just like 2007 - high hopes that came crashing back to earth. A list suddenly too old, too slow. Chris Connolly resigned in 2007, something that most people here think Ross Lyon should do. In the two years after CC left, we finished 14th and 14th.
Why aren't we Sydney, Geelong, Hawthorn, Adelaide or WC? Almost always in the mix for finals. I don't know, but perhaps its because there have been times in the past when we've looked short term. Perhaps the AFL and the local media haven't championed us. Perhaps its because we sold our soul for some chevrons. Who knows.
But I don't see any reason to change the coach. That is the sort of short term thinking that would have got rid of Bomber Thompson mid season from the Cats. That would have sacked Damien Hardwick from Richmond.
Nobody likes losing. It sucks. But historically we are very good at it.
