TOPIC: Alex Pearce Forward

Surely we have to make Alex our superstar forward we are looking for. He is big and fast. Surely it's time to give the opposition coach a key forward that makes them defend us?

There's a lot more to being a forward than being big and fast...

besides, if he took his bigness and fastosity there would still suffer from poor delivery from a midfield under the pump because the rebound from defense was haphazard without Pearse down there to anchor it.

We have built a solid defence, Pearce looks great running straight at the ball and cruising through the traffic. Build your back six and then proceed from there. We are doing that with Hamling, Ryan, Wilson etc...looking very solid and reliable. We need Pearce back there, it is the brightest area for us at the moment. Put Alex Pearce down forward and keep delilvering the way we do and nothing is gained. Build defence first, mids to maintain contested work and deliver the ball properly, and populate the forward half with marking and quick players.
Pearce to stay back...a great player in the making.

I appreciate his value to the team Suker, don't get me wrong. We do have some other good options to go back (and I'm not thinking Kersten). Building the team from the backline works really well, just ask Ross. I think we cover using Cox, Duman, Hamling, Logue, Nyhuis, depending on the opponents forward structure. When Pearce first came on the seen and was thrown forward he showed a lot of promise. He would have to be our best KPP, why not see if he can create some carnage instead of using him in a negating role. It might give the team some confidence to drive the ball forward knowing they have someone in there who can win a contest. I am not sure if anyone saw the recent speed and distance results published, he was our fastest player and surprisingly covered the 3rd most distance. Imagine that, a fast, mobile, tall marking playing in the forward line.

Even if he struggles initially, we've got more midgets on the payroll than 1930's MGM studios, it wouldn't hurt to have someone who can read the flight of the ball and make a contest in the forward line to give them something to do.

Yeah, he could be something down forward, although he may be suited to defence more, in my opinion. And the reason I like him back is because he does run straight and weaves through traffic, and I reckon this is another attacking weapon from defence. His height and speed are so valuable down back, he reminds me of Luke Mac in some ways and will only get better. Maybe a swing down forward at a pinch. I know he has the same attributes that we crave for a KPF but I just reckon he is still settling in after bone busting years and having the play in front of him and given someone to beat may be best for him at this stage. But one day...he may be forward.

So what we are saying is Alex Pearce is our version of Tom McDonald (Melb) or Cale Hooker (Ess). Hooker is now back at CHB. I would suggest it's worth a try but I hope it's only a band aid temporary measure and we can get a forward like Hogan or Patton next year. If we can get McGovern then may be Pearce if he shows something forward stays forward. In the mean time give Apeness another go forward and ruck and wait for Tabs to come back to give us contested marking power forward..

he actually played as a midfielder until he shot up in height.
a short run on the ball like r Stanley may be an option.
ah to much flair and unpredictability for our coach.

That is right Ex...shot up like a rocket, played on a wing. If we do end up with a glut of defenders then onball...why not? Sometimes players are just labelled for life, to their detriment. Matt Richo...tall forward forever, average set shot, moved to a wing in his 30s and killed it! Other potential onballers: Logue, Hughes, Blakey...but poor old Rossy can't see what we experts can.

Tigers persevered with Alex Rance down back despite needing somebody to help Reiwoldt for many years. Worked out fine for them in the end and Alex is a better player than Rance at the same age. Don't mess him around.

I'm agnostic on whether it's Pearce forward or someone else. But isn't the problem that, under the current game plan, "forward" seems to mean somewhere around the centre circle? By the time we send anyone forward, there seem to be more opposition defenders there than Freo forwards.
We need to recruit some defenders who can kick goals from 80m out. Then we don't need any forwards at all.
