TOPIC: Worrying

After a solid if unspectacular start to the season things have really started to unravel. I don't know enough to say that it's down to the coaching, game plan or what but it does concern me that so many of our players have lost form, look dispirited, are arguing onfield.and if we had any depth would be lucky to get a game.
Confidence is at a huge low.

If you go through our squad it's a concern that so many of our young and old players are not playing as well as they were last year, so no wonder we aren't winning.

About the only guys that I think are playing better than last year are Fyfe, Langdon and Ryan. There are a few that are probbly similar but there are plenty that are worse imo.

As for new faces. Matera has not come to the party. Pearce form has tapered off and so has Wilson.

I don't know the answers but it's as if they need to have something different at training, rebuild team morale and be given more freedom to take the game on. Anything to break this downward spiral.

I’m concerned for the young players too. Cox seems to be confused when he’s near the ball, where he has to go and when he has the ball in hand he’s not comfortable and his goal kicking isn’t reliable. I’m no AFL genius but these things seem to be coaching issues.
The kid has potential someone should be guiding him.

Cox is a big young man who has only played a small amount of AFL games, it could be expected he is not A grade yet. Chf is known to be a difficult position to master....give him a chance.

Cox's kicking action is the right hand coming off the ball too early, he isn't guiding it down. If this is changeable then great, but it may have been drilled into him as a child, teen etc To get to this point and try and change his natural style is difficult.
As for morale, I agree. There has to be some enjoyment and unity. There may well be but we can only see what we see from the stands and tv. But, I have said before, if young players are seeing veterans continue to be picked who do not warrant inclusion, then this has to send some wrong messages. It sends me some very bad messages. Dropping Hughes after one game was a disgrace, no matter how badly he played. After a 13 goal loss and he is the sole scapegoat? If Lyon is true to his word he will play youth and maybe install some hope for the squad themselves.

I agree the kid has potential and could be anything but he needs to develop and receive the right coaching.

I'm less worried about Cox because he's only 19 and still developing as a player, and he is a very good contested mark, with the ability to time his run at the ball (compared with, say, Cammac, who usually appears belatedly in the frame after an opposition defender takes an uncontested mark). Without the rain he would have ended up with 10 or so marks yesterday. He's not a bad field kick, but just needs to kick through the ball when shooting for goal - just needs a bit more confidence. I agree he looks confused at times, but don't most of the the Freo players? And if that isn't a coaching issue, nothing else is.

I'm more worried about Lachie Neale. In the previous game I noticed that, in the last quarter, he appeared very frustrated and a couple of times handballed and kicked the ball without bothering to look where it was going, i.e. going through the motions. Yesterday he was less competitive and seemed out of sorts. I think this is beginning to show up in other players and has to be a reflection of team morale in general.

Oh, and I think that's a coaching issue as well.

Thought Neale didn't seem his usual self and was just wandering around the ground yesterday and highlights your point about lack of team morale. Watching the replay it was obvious yesterday a few of the veterans were just running around on their own guarding grass and never bothered to pick up a man when ball was turned over. Just real lazy footy and looks like it's about picking up their pay packet this year knowing it's probably their last. I would rather lose by a lot playing young guys who are prepared to have a red hot go and at least try to sort out who might make it before it's to late.

PTalk about teaching someone to kick....is it too late to teach Matera to kick on his opposite foot.

Yes, too late for that. If he doesn't find some form soon and kick a goal or two it might be too late altogether for Matera.

Yes Big L...I just don't get that players can get to this level and not have the opposite foot drilled into them. Every chance you get on the run at training should be the opposite foot...makes you twice the player surely. eg Mitchell, Akermanis and so on

Wingman, the young fellas are not worried about what the vets are doing on field, they are to busy trying to work out exactly what they are supposed to be doing and where they are supposed to be doing it, and how far back they have to run to do it, to worry about anything, including what would be the best thing to do when they get the footy. So I would not worry about the lazy vets destroying their morale, I would worry about the lazy coaching box doing that.

I wonder how S Hill, Mundy, Johnno, Danyle Pearce, Sandi feel when they realise that their chances of playing in a premiership team are close to zero? Maybe that thought has an effect when you are running around in the rain in a game which seems, in the great scheme of things, to be relatively meaningless.

I remember when we were flying in round 8 or 9 2015 looking like the best team in the race by the straight. My Hawks supporting buddy who is also a reasonable judge saw me in the morning at one point and said they may as well issue the cup now. At the time I specifically remember Lyon hosing down the hype and going to pains to stress our blue collar list. It didn’t sit with me at the time as I felt we could embrace the belief. Since then I have seen a number of clubs fostering this enthusiasm and using it help build belief in what they are doing, I don’t hear them trying to undersell what they are achieving.
Since he made those comments we have been onlyblue collar receiving blue collar pay packets. Same goes for occasionally applying the heat to the playing group when it is justified. Listen to Cameron’s presser this week he made sense and seemed genuine, same as Buckley when under the pump last year.

Man management is so critical.
Look at the self entitlement of our Ballantyne. For 2 years after his all Australian performance in 2014 he was dreadful. Never once was he dropped. Then he got his nose out of joint when the dockers refused to extend his contract one year early. Now after seeing d Pearce getting a 2 year extension in 2016, round 8, he probably felt entitled. If he can get one surely I am entitled. He got a big dose of reality when no one came a nocking. Ross in his stubborn or misguided loyalty destroys these young men by not giving them a loving/kindly reminder to go back to the 2’s and find form. He killed ibbo who was so badly out of form and was played well beyond his time in the ones that by the time ross finally acknowledged the obvious the man was totally destroyed of confidence.
The same is happening to c mcarthy who could learn a thing or two about resilience by having an extended run at peel. I do believe in him, but he is mentally not tough enough YET. With some time at peel , finding some confidence may help him grow as a player.
There is backing your players but there is also setting an example and going back to peel to find form is perfectly acceptable.
In a rebuild , risks with youth need to be taken, it is one that Goes against ross beliefs. Last week he was asked by journo’s will giro come in for the north game after some prominent performances. NO he says because it would be tough on several players who were in front of him ( referring to d Pearce).

This mess is not entirely due to ross and his misguided man management. Recruiting , player welfare etc have been far from elite.
