Ok, Disclaimer. I must admit I wasn't overly thrilled when we drafted Matera as I viewed him as a player who has his fair share of injuries and to be honest never really looked like he had an appetite for getting amongst it. Therefore I have given him 10 rounds before bringing him to task, but after todays performance, enough is enough. Wet weather, perfect weather for a small forward, should have lots of tackles and the opportunity to get amongst it. Two tackles for the entire game and he didn't even bother hitting the scoreboard. I know we have a dysfunctional forward line but he had the opportunity to impact on the game around the ground, and not for the first time, he simply didn't.

I have been looking at his statistics for the first 10 rounds this year as opposed to his 10 last year at the Suns, and he is marginally down on the key stats such as kicks, handballs, marks and tackles. However, when it comes to what we drafted him for, goal kicking, this time last year he had 22 goals, this season he has a mere 9 and doesn't look like really threatening in any aspect of his football.

Then I looked a bit deeper into his goal kicking exploits and found the following:

2011 12 games for 15 goals 8 behinds
2012 17 games for 11 goals 16 behinds
2013 10 games for 7 goals 13 behinds
2014 16 games for 27 goals 17 behinds
2015 19 games for 18 goals 12 behinds
2016 17 games for 24 goals 14 behinds

In fairness to Matera his stats this season are still better than Ballentynes, in all key facets, except Ballentyne has kicked one more goal than Brandon, so really that is nothing to really brag about.

Therefore the question is, did we trade in a crab or has Ross already sucked the life out of him with whatever semblance of a game plan we allegedly possess??

And some had the nerve to shoot down any thought of even contemplating Liam Ryan as being worth looking at.

I would have preferred Liam Ryan. But guess who got him?

I haven’t made up my mind on Matera at this point in time. I will give him the same amount of grace time as I gave McCarthy, one full year to adjust after joining the list and coming back from injury. I will say I have much lower expectations of him than McCarthy, given what we gave up for him and probably salary he receives. Statistically I would guess his output is higher than both Ballantyne and McCarthy and I trust him with ball in hand more than Ballantyne at present.
I can’t for the life of me see how people can justify virtually minimal output from McCarthy and make excuses for it. Kersten copped the same last year after kicking a whopping one goal less than McCarthy. Taberner has previously copped plenty of flack from various quarters for less ineffectiveness than McCarthy has demonstrated.

he's in our top 4 goal kickers for the season averaging a goal per game.. A few more tackles would be nice but at the same time i was always critical of chris mayne that his tackling was good, but the team needed goals. Some tackles lead to goals i know..

Now if our forward set up was possibly a little bit better and some of the delivery from the mids a little bit better.. would we be having this conversation if he was up around the 1.5-2 goals per game mark?

The whole team is struggling, not just him. Except fyfe.

Yep, and you just keep wasting away in that backline at Peel, Kersten.

If we're frustrated imagine how he must feel.

I like what Brandon brings to the team, a lot. But i think he's trying too hard and gets in a pickle sometimes. He's quality and a good creative footballer. Just my opinion.

Yeah, I loved how he was 20 m in the clear on the wing and then suddenly dropped the ball turned it over for the 10th time in the game and north went back and scored a goal. Pure matera Magic!

I played with and against Brandon growing up so I have always taken an interest in how he's going. I watched him carefully at GC and had him in my DuFFLe side for a number of years not doing a lot. He never seemed to make good decisions or work hard enough. His skills were ok but nothing special and his pace isn't great either.

Watching him at Freo he has struggled and turned the footy over a lot which is not good enough with the number of inside 50m entries we have. He doesn't put on defensive pressure and doesn't attract the footy. most of his possessions seem to be up on the half back flank running forward and I would wager more than 50% of those end up with the opposition kicking it back inside their forwardline.

Bring Giro in for him.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I thought our forward line lacked a little goal-hungriness, and Matera could help provide it. I think I was wrong.

I don't think we can carry both him and Ballas in the same team. We need some smalls with genuine pace, and although Walters has the smarts and skills to make up for not being a speedster, it's obvious we don't have anyone in the forward line who scares the opposition for sheer pace.

With the Hills being absent (I know Stephen played yesterday, barely) we actually look a bit one-paced over the whole ground, even though out team has plenty of young legs.

I think for now we have to choose one of Ballas or Matera, and for mine Ballas gets the nod, just, based on loyalty and perhaps reward for bravery.

I tend to agree Morgan on Ballas and Matera but would choose Matera. My reasoning is that he is younger with more room to improve, we have only seen 10 games.
I don’t think either is the answer or the problem, but either is worthy of the same defence given to other under performers. Wouldn’t e think anyone’s expectations would be for either to be in our best 10. We currently have a guy who finished in our top ten last year as a forward that is being taught to be a back, because we are all in on another.
