TOPIC: Hindsight Drafting

Ricco Hindsight Drafting 5 years 11 months ago #1

Ricco
I'm as peeved as anyone about our current plight. But out of curiosity, I went back through recent drafts to see what we would have done with hindsight to fix our key forward problem.

Below were our first picks and my assessment of what good KPP's could have helped our team based on selections after than - Looking at the picks we had:. No point looking at the Hogans of the world as clearly we were never in the hunt.

My problem is this...... I want to stick the boot into the club about poor recruiting of KPP's, but to be honest I don't actually think there were any other good options available to us given our draft selections over the past few years.

2011
16 - T-bone
20 - Crozier
32 - Hamling (Dogs), now with us
34 - Kersten (Cats), now with us
No other real stand out KPP's in that draft

2012
17 - Josh Simpson
This is probably the one we'd regret. Brodie Grundy went at 18 and he would have been handy
36 - Tanner Smith - obviously never worked out
No other names past that stand out as key forwards that would help our plight at the moment

2013
17 - Apeness
Drafted a KPP as our 1st choice. Good call (?)
37 - Pearce
Drafted a KPP at our 2nd choice. Good call - worked out really well for us here.
43 - Barass (West Coast) would have been a useful pickup
47 - Brown (North), obviously one of the best in the league now
56 - Sicily (Hawks), I still haven't seen much of this guy but he has been talked up on this forum
No other KPP's of note. Apeness is obviously a miss at the moment, but I can see that we went for needs here. Easy to say we should have picked up Brown, but reality is that we picked up a KPP forward and back in the 2 picks prior.

2014
13 - Weller
14 - Lever (Crows) is the obvious KPP miss, although given his "go home" and our subsequent Weller trade, can't complain too much about that
34 - Blakely, not a bad pickup
43 - Mitch McGovern (Crows) would have been good, but he certainly isn't a KPP
54 - Langdon - I think has turned out fantastic and is one of our best at the moment
No other KPP's of note that I think we missed out on

2015
27 - Tucker
38 - Balic
No other KPP's of any note in this draft

2016
8 - Griffin Logue
38 - Darcy
41 - Cox
66 - Ryan
Reckon it is too early to make the call on any of the KPP's at this draft, but Darcy and Ryan look really good pickups

Lever was the big miss and we all screamed about it at the time but obviously he is not a forward. The next question I would ask is how many good small forwards did we miss. Freo have needed goalkickers of any description for years, big or small.

Ben Brown ?

The real story in all that is we screwed up every first pick we had for five years.

Yeah well, if we could change history I wouldn't mind getting the initial picks of gws and gc. They had the picks of the nation but still haven't really gone all the way. Hell I would love to have had what that mob up the road got...that crop of 7 aa u18s from wa wasn't a bad score, and so on. We have got some good young players who have a crack. It is what it is. We may rise to the top. That is what's great about it...anything could happen. Always Freo.

Hypen, Brown was 2013. We picked up apeness and Pearce before him.

I can see why Freo picked as they did. Unfortunately Apeness hasn’t worked out (yet)

Him and Grundy are probably the 2 big misses in all that time. And we are no orphans there.

Thats a little harsh, Hypen.

I don't think we have screwed up every first pick in the last 5 years. we've had some ill luck and some ill management thats true.

I think Apeness can still work out given time. He may not be the best forward we have but he could still work out. I'd like to see him actually developed as a forward though and not as a second ruckman who can rest forward. He wasn't drafted as a ruck, he was drafted as a forward.

We had two picks inside the top 5 this year and early signs look promising, so I wouldn't write them off just yet.

I think the real problem is what we do with developing our early picks. Having the potential isn't a guarantee of success. Much of that is how they are developed.

This is a stupid thread. Drafting is a hit and miss process. You work with what you've got.

You can't draft a Brownlow medallist every year. But you can blame the players as a whole for a poor team performance.

Would you prefer Masten, Redden or other crabs? They are shit players playing in a good team. I lost count of mates who wanted Darling traded last year.

Sure we've drafted crabs like Anthony and Sylvia. But crabs like Spangher and Mitch Morton are premiership players. It is the player's form and team effort that counts.

The backline has great draftees in Ryan and Pearce. The midfield has the best bloody player in the AFL and some great youngsters. The forward line has been the problem but Tabs was taking 9-10 marks a game before he went down. McCarthy is OK but not the key forward.

Injuries have been costly. There hasn't been sufficient cover for Taberner, B. Hill and Darcy. The Slime only have Schuey missing.

You only have to look at Adelaide and GWS. They're much better than they're playing at the moment due to their injury counts.

Under this coach and with this manegment I refuse to judge any player.

Look the drafting hasn't been a total write off and I think the last two years of list management have been excellent.

But this thing is not getting fixed anytime soon. There's more pain. 19 and 20 will be tough.

More than harsh. Brayshaw, Cerra, Logue and Darcy look to be more than handy already.

'14 and '15, we had bugger all picks to choose from anyway, but we got Langdon and Blakely and our first pick buggered off after a couple of years.

Trouble is, they're all coached by an arseclown.

Was referencing 11 to 15. 5 years. Not a lot to show at all.

Compared to other clubs our i jury list has been minimal. We use that excuse every year but it just seems to show our lack of depth.
When the slime beat GWS away they had Natanui, Shuey and McGovern out and Kennedy just back from missing all the pre season. And they won easily.
Take three similar good to very good, although we don't like to admit they are, players out of our side and the result doesn't bear thinking about. We get smashed with our best players in so if they were out, sends shivers down the spine.

Let's face it we lack accountability at the top.....they were more worried about their own contracts....they are failing on every level.

There are two aspects to a successful draft of a youngster.

I) Picking the kid out of a morass of others.
II) Developing the kid into a top player.

I would suggest we start looking at step two, rather than focusing on step one.
