I don't think that we should be bringing up the umps too much.
Yes they were poor but from what i saw they were poor across the board. While its probable that we got the worst of it and some monumentally shocking non-calls, it just strikes me as being a bit rich blaming the umps when we don't deal with our own problems.
If we had actually done our best to secure a win and lost because of bad calls then fine but that wasn't the case. It hasn't been the case for a long time.
Its simple when you break it down to one basic element, you don't win many games when you kick around 15 points per quarter. Yesterday we kicked 58 points. The game before we kicked 52. Before that we kicked 89 (St Kilda), 33 wow Richmond), 81 (slime), 108, (Bulldogs), 51 (Giants), 96 (Suns), 106 (Bummers) and 60 (Port).
As a team we should be scoring at least 90 points per game to give ourselves a chance of winning and we have done that 3 times in 10 games. We've kicked 60 or less points in 5 of 10 games. It may not be rocket science but clearly its too hard for people in the million dollar a year salary bracket to figure out what one glaring problem is and address it.
If they haven't addressed it by this stage, I'm prepared to consider the proposition that they don't know how to address it. I would like to think that the board should be thinking along the same lines and while i may not be an AFL accredited coach, I'm confident in saying that having a 5 man forward line that is mostly short blokes is not the answer to our scoring woes.
If we cannot score at an average of 3 goals per quarter, no rebuild will ever change our situation. We will remain at the bottom end of the competition and be the next Carlton.
