We are indeed a terrible football side. Our forward line is nonexistent. Decision making is terrible and the brand of football demanded by our coach is dour and unattractive to watch. Our captain and best player wears a bloody man bun. 2 of our best 5 players are over 30 and will be gone next year further exposing the youngsters. The maggots still hate us. 2 of our 3 backline rebounders can’t kick straight. Our board and coaches have not improved 1 iota in the last 4 years. Finals are a pipe dream, not just now but for the next 5 years.

Meanwhile our nemesis have structure, skill and a forward line. They play exciting attacking football and they win.

Lyon took a rebuilt team to the gf after Harvey did all the hard work. He really has achieved nothing except negotiating a hefty paycheque. Now we the tortured supporters are meant to suck it up whilst the team dishes up rubbish on a consistent basis. Someone said groundhog years, 100% right.

Blakely, and a few others, take on 3 tacklers because they know they have to buy time, they can't put the ball to a vacant part of the ground between half back and the centre line. Why? Because all or most of our forwards and most of the opposition defenders are there. This takes away the advantage of Sandi's height (opponents can double/triple team him, scrag and chop at him), the pace of our mids (nowhere to lead to use that pace), and the result is to be tackled deep in defense, or put it on the head of a teammate standing still. Recipes for failure.

Look at the good sides. They have space for players to lead into, and players with the confidence to back teammates 1 on 1. While I believe we don't get a fair deal from the umps, we make it a lot harder by giving the opposition the chance to lock us deep in defense for long periods, because of the above, they let us swing the ball across goals inside the 50, knowing that the ball will eventually be coughed up by our or umps mistakes.

How many times, AGAIN, yesterday did we see a player get the footy in space across the middle, look to go forward, see nothing and have to go back into the pursuing pack. That 1 problem is what has taken away the skills that S Hill brings to the game, the ability to break the lines with his pace and deception. He is playing like a man who has realized that until the game plan changes, he is going to be just another slogger. As someone else stated, having players running into the forward line with the attack as your only options up front is not attack 101. The player running with the flight of the footy into the 50 is the surprise option, used rarely. He usually only gets the ball when all the forwards have led up the ground without the lead being honored, so is running, alone, into vacant spaces inside 50. At the moment all our forwards are leading into the 50, covered by opponents, not out from the10 yard square or it's vicinity.

Opposition defensive coaches are probably all taking their mid season breaks the week their team plays Freo, because they know they don't hsave any work to do, it is just "do what you did last time (and for the last 5 years ) against them, see you in 10 days.

It’s interesting that we can lose to North and some say they are basically a bunch of crabs and that Ross is not string enough out of our seemingly more talented list.

Brown, Higgins, Jacobs, Cunnington, Waite are just a few who would slot straight into our team.

As for Stephen Hill - blaming the way he is playing on the game plan is a cop out. Whether through form, confidence, injury recovery or something else he’s been playing horribly for a while now.

I've got a theory that Ross's game plan is a bit like Scientology. He releases it to the players in stages, so at first it all seems a relatively reasonable idea but then by the time you get a few levels up like Stephen Hill, you find out about aliens and volcanoes and you either take it all in or or nothing makes sense any more and you can't go along with it any more.

Someone blamed Lyon for McCarthy not giving a handball over the top in the square then missing a 15m set shot a couple of weeks ago. Blaming Lyon for Stephen Hill forgetting how to play football seems reasonable in comparison.

As for Blakely, he didn’t pick up the intensity of the game and got caught out a few times. It happens. Long bow to put that on the coach.

To me it looked like a game for some little blokes to have an influence. Neale was well below his best. Ballas and Matera contributed very little. Matera’s pass 25m sideways to Cox when Matera was running straight down the guts into the 50 in the third was one of the more baffling decisions of the day. I think Cox was leading to get out of Matera’s way!

I thought Cox tried hard, and he’s a smart player, but in a close game missing from 15m straight in front then straight down the other end for a goal hurt.

We weren’t far off, but North took their chances when it mattered, while we made hard work of it at times. I thought it was a decent game of footy after quarter time.

You have your theories Flag, I have mine. Look at S Hill, B Hill, Blakely, Wilson, Neale, McCarthy, all recruited because of the way they play and the strengths their style of play brings to the side. None of them playing in that way at the moment because they are forced to adhere to "team rules and game plans".

A game plan only works if when you control the game and have superior players winning contests.
The only time we controlled the game yesterday is when our players got the ball in our backline and passed backwards to hold up play because there was no options outside Norths forward fifty.

The team rules never stopped Lachie Neale winning a Doug Medal. What’s changed exactly?

We are a battling team who will get beaten unless our top 10 or so players play at their absolute best. Yesterday, to name only a few, Hill, Blakely, Neale, Wilson were a long way short of that.

We actually know more about scientology than we do about the inner mechanics of our football club. We, like scientology, only get to see the performers on game day. Scientologists get to see Tom Cruise and others ply their wares on the big stage (that's their problem by the way). But, ex scientologists have come out and spoken out against the organisation and participated in bringing out the truth about their allegedly corrupt "church". So, what I am suggesting is that maybe a film maker amongst us would like to produce a warts and all film on the FFC, you know, microphones in faces, getting moved on if too close to the admin building, shocking affairs revealed, money laundering etc. Surely there is someone out there...anyone...?

Ok, I’ll admit it - I completely lost the plot at the umpiring about half way through the third quarter.

Whilst a few fellow supporters around me in 525 congratulated me on the constant stream of abuse I sent the green meanies from then on - I’m just glad my kids weren’t there to see it.

Yes we got stictched up and I’m assuming the ‘Dusty Fend’ is now outlawed (yeah, right). But I think I counted the first 6 disposals of D.Pearce all miss their target. Ballas was on the ground more than his feet and for all the legendary games he has played for us - AAJohnno’s time has come.

When the young’uns are seeing 200 game veterans butcher the ball, go to ground in contests or get caught out through indecision and/or telegraphing their next move - it’s hardly a surprise when all confidence disappears.

That is what it boils down to, IMHO. Too few trying to do too much for too long. The kids all showed something at various times but, as kids and in wet, heavy conditions - they didn’t for plenty of the game.

Were we to have our first choice 22 out there - maybe we might have pinched it. It’d be interesting to see what Norfs injuries were like last year when all and sundry were picking them a spooners this year. This year - healthy list and they will probably play finals.

Duman, Giro, Apeness and (insert small forward here) should all get a run on the ‘G next week - regardless of the outcome. These will be the blokes who line up in our next tilt and they need exposure on the deck where flags are won or lost.

No disrespect to these great, loyal and passionate purple warriors - but their best is behind them and the future needs to get games into them.

Changing the coach won’t change what’s needed to be done - but as far as escaped goats go Roly is all of The Fist, D.Pearce and Hendrix rolled into one.

Wow the season is unravelling fast. I never thought we would be a top eight team this year although always hopeful.
I was hoping to see us become competitive against the very good teams challenge the good teams and demonstrate some excitement against lowly teams.
The last three weeks have been very poor against this gauge and we are now again playing like a rabble.
St Kilda have been horrendous all year and had Membrey kicked straight we could of lost that game. We only led by so much at half time because of how bad they were not because any brilliance on our behalf.
North Melbourne were 1.8 at qtr tim, if that had been 8.1 we would have been blown away. There was only about 15-20min that I thought we were any chance of winning.
It looks like at our best we are able to achieve 5-6 goal wins against the worst teams in the comp at home.

Oh now I see how they were able to lock the ball in their forward fifty. Maybe if we try that strategy of aim at the points, we could start to lock it into ours, because currently it comes out quicker than it goes in.
