What we actually lack is that 191 - 193 genuine forwards. All our small forwards are not really markers. If you look at the swans there small forwards all take a mean mark - they somehow play tall and are able to put forward pressure.
The eagles have waterman 190 and darling 191 who can also take a good mark BUT also are able to play small and put forward pressure.
Our small forwards Ballantyne , matera are not markers. C mcarthy is not a contested tall marker and puts little to no pressure on as well. He is good when the game is played on his terms ie leading out onto the ball.
Tabenar is good in a contested situation. But does not have the agility of Kennedy who can also put elite forward pressure on.
So while our forward line has certain great talents , none of them are able to make an impact ( except Walters) when the game is not on their terms.
You add to the poor ball movement and you get the schmazole we have.
There is in my mind no doubt a different coach with a different game plan would get more out of our forwards.
There is also no doubt r Lyon coaching the eagles would do better as they have a truely elite forward team, that are more alrounded to make the most of the opportunities even when the game is not on their terms.
What does this all mean , if we want a quick fix then get rid of the coach ( as he won’t or can’t accept changing his style). Or wait years in the hope of getting truely elite forwards who succeed in making the most of lyon’s game plan.
