TOPIC: Recruiting

I'm not going to dredge up the past and talk about the skinny Victorian midfield drafting years, but look at last year's draft picks.

Why do you think when even that great football critic Blind Freddy could see that our forward line was our big weakness and the stocks were already thin there, in both drafts with 10 choices only take two forwards-Dixon at 44 and Switkowski at 73.

We also drafted two lumbering ruckmen when we already had another two and the rest were midfielders. Why have so many ruckmen any way when the coach will only ever play one specialist ruckman in the side? Other teams will play two but not us.

We then go to this year and both the forwards we drafted have long term injuries, one TBA(see you next year).

We then have another of our key forwards in Tabener injured and TBA as well.

Then we go to our great white hope as key forward over the last few years in Apeness who is finally fit but Roly says he is now primarily a ruckman. That of course makes five big behemoths ruckmen that have a bigger turning circle than the Queen Mary.

Then to Strnadica. We recruit him as a long term key forward prospect but he spends 2017 in the Peel reserves playing as a ruckman. In the last few weeks he has played as forward in the league and surprise surprise has been regularly kicking a few goals.

Now Jones, the 205 cm ruckman we recruited. Ruckman? No, we play him at Peel as a CHF while Apeness who was supposed to be a forward plays in the ruck.

How about Kersten who we recruited as a forward? We are desperately short of forwards but Roly early in the season states that Kersten is now to become a backman. This is one area where we already have more than enough players to fill gaps.

Of course we also have the other ruckmen in Meek that we recruited but didn't need, but we've got so many ruckmen, even with one out injured in Darcy that he has to play reserves.

Is there some sort of stubborness with the coaching panel? What is it with the recruiters? How come most of us can see the bleeding obvious and they can't?

God, it's frustrating being a Freo supporter.

Maybe we need to recruit players who would be good at whatever we decide to change them into.

Good post CA.. there is some serious key position talent at the top end of this years draft.. fingers crossed we can nail a goal kicking machine.. yeah what is it about ruckman? every club has some absolute spuds on there list praying that they will finally learn to play.. probably not as many as us though

On the plus side, I see that Darcy is listed as 3 weeks. We might yet get to see Freo playing 2 ruckmen this season.

We could recruit Paul Puop from the Orcs as a forward and get him onto Essendons growth program?

Is just poor manegment , lack of accountability and being comfortable in their jobs.....and that is bleeding the club

It shouldn’t make me laugh but that has left me with a sore belly corporal.......oh well I suppose you have to laugh sometimes

Just the sheer frustration coming through resonated with me I think.........

We finally get two picks inside the top 5 and for the first time in the history of the AFL there are bugger all stand out forwards available to draft so we’ve gone with midfielders.

Lyon had better hurry up trying to mould a game plan around what we have because it isn’t going to change for a long while. In the meantime we have got to hope one of the blokes you described finally comes good.

There was a stand out tall KK, Brander. Guess where he ended up.

Standout? Hasn’t played a game.. There has been a lot of flops with the high end key position players in recent years.. McCartin and Weitering pick 1.. Josh Schache pick 2.. it’s early days but not many of them are really looking like exploding.. even Tom Boyd although he was awesome in the grand final hasn’t really delivered for a pick 1 / million dollar a year player.. Jack Watts was supposed to be a gun full forward.. I can see how the recruiters get a bit gun shy

He was the standout key forward in last year's draft. He's obviously not going to get a game before Kennedy, Darling and Waterman at this stage, but I guarantee he would already be playing in our disfunctional forward line.

Plus he's been playing well in the slime reserves and has signed a contract extension.

You could say there are failures in every draft, not just key forwards. We could have a great list of midfielders and others just from Fremantle. Your post suggests that it's too risky drafting any forwards because recent ones haven't succeeded.

As has been pointed out by others here, they are also like ruckmen in that they take longer to learn their craft but when and if they do they are so important to team structure, as we can see from our woes without one at the moment.

Recruitment discussions are interesting and frustrating of course, but we have what we have at the moment. Duman reminds me a bit of the Hawks' Gunston, same height (192-3), has speed, nice kick and can mark the ball. I don't think Gunston is actually seen as the stereotypical KPF, more of a tall small if you know what i mean. But how much damage has he created over the years? The point I am making is that with a bit of innovation and risk Freo could at least changing it up a bit. Why couldn't Duman have an impact up forward? Lyon has said how skilful and quick he is. And I am not saying Duman forward is the answer to all our woes, just that we could be looking at our list with a bit more of an open mind.

Yes Detox the standout forward in the draft. It’s not unusual for a kpp to spend a couple of years in the resi’s to develop. Freo should of taken him with pick 5. Let’s see what we do with this years top 5 pick.

In hindsight I would've grabbed that Fogerty kid that Adelaide drafted - for sure. But you've got to get your house in order first or they're going to walk after 2 years - playing under a coach in charge of your development has to be the biggest concern of any newbie.

Every club in the competition takes the best available player inside the top 10 no matter where they play. Brander wasn’t inside the top 10 let alone top 5.

Imagine the howls of abuse if we picked Brander at 5 instead of Cerra and Brander turned out like McCartin.
