We all know he can't score on a Friday night. Apparently his last attempt cost 100k.

(too soon?)

I've watched alot of Freo games and I've never noticed other teams keep more players permanently stationed in their forward half / forward 50 than we do.

You're probably right Purp Mao...it must come back to us not running hard enough to get back where we need to be to receive incoming ball?

This bloke has an opinion.

"What's the point of having a key forward anymore? Let's just play little fellas down there. Let's compete, try to bring it to ground. There's more marks taken by the defenders at one end of the ground.

It used to be that you spoilt down the back end and you marked it in the front end. Now you mark it in the back end and you spoil in the front end.

You get guys like Jesse Hogan, who is a terrific forward, but he has to go up to the wing now and hope that he can just outrun his player back to the goalsquare, because that is his most significant advantage he's got over his opponent, when really, it should be that his great advantage is what he was drafted for, and that's to be a star key forward of our game"

I'm not sure how genuine he was there, suggesting we go "back" to playing the ball.

What era was that?

Keep in mind it was in the context of whinging about the umpires. Next month he'll be saying the job has become too hard for defenders because they can't use their bodies.

There's a lot more blocking going on these days.

Hogan, et al are playing up on the wing because coaches are telling them to. Because umpires bounce the ball instead of paying free kicks, (eagles excepted) coaches believe they need numbers around the ball, especially if they perceive they have an inferior list. The Saints of circa 2010, the Freo side of '13-'15, and the Bulldogs of '16 have shown this style to be unsustainable, even when successful. Even the Hawks, though flirting with the concept went away from it to try and sustain their reign at the top.

Aaah the heady days of one field umpire, when men were men and blocking was a punch to the back of the head.

Most of the footy world saw / heard that from Clarko and just scratched the WTF into their heads.

The bottom line for me is that we can't develop a good side if you are getting smashed every week. We already have a good midfield. Building from a good defence is the way forward.

The idea a coaching tweak will solve everything belongs on the back of a packet of conflakes with a bunch of other low grade advertising copy. If it was that simple they would have done it. I'm not sure how our guys will eventually stack up but it's as clear as mud that they need a couple of years of work. This applies to most of the team. Getting a Buddy up forward would help* but the problem is deeper that that.

* Not a Sticky Buddy.

Morgan, I didn't agree but liked the post and exercise. So how do we rate it this weekend?

It's amazing how much better our forward line looks with a couple of genuine marking targets. Cox's hands are so sticky, you can see how confident the Freo players are to kick it to him. Jones and Apeness made a couple of really good contests as well. It made me think how much better our forward line would look with Hodor resting forward when he comes back. He's twice the player Jones is, so that's exciting.

I'm a big CamMac fan, but it's clear that if we're asking him to play as a KPP he can't fill that role even as well as a workman-like big man like Jones.

Ballas and Matera were both handy yesterday, but I can't help feeling that we're not quite getting enough out of both of them combined. If there are other big blokes up forward, I'd be inclined to pick CamMac in lieu of a small forward (he plays much more like a small anyway).

I still think our best forward combination for scoring goals has Tabs, Cox, CamMac, Walters, Matera and Banfield. The problem with that set-up is that we have virtually no defensive pressure if we don't score. A good backline will cut through our forwards like butter, and then run straight through the middle of the ground running the other way.

But as for the backs v forwards, our backmen were wonderful yesterday. Pearce and Hamling are a great combination of talls, and Wilson and Ryan are both great with the ball in hand, and steady enough in defence to make scoring difficult. On a couple of occasions Ryan got stuck on Tex and held his own for strength, which was unexpected. We've looked a bit discombobulated in the backline the last few weeks, but when there is good pressure from the middle, our backs do a really good job of reading the play and moving it out quickly.

I still reckon our backs would towel up our forwards.
