TOPIC: Poor Relations

Unfortunately we have certainly slipped back into this when it comes to a two team town no matter what the media builds up. Cop all the slime supporters barbs and derogatory comments and there's not really much you can give back at the moment.

So what has happened? We expected them to slide dramatically this year and us to improve and finish above them. Well that's certainly not going to happen so what are they doing right that we're not?

Forward line structure and Mitchell as the driving force seem to be the main reasons given here. Anything else?

I believe the board has a lot to answer for as well as dale Alcock.
From the misguided handling of the ross glending medal to the harassment claims they have shown themselves to be a poor board.
Fixing this mess is not going to happen over night.
The poor recruiting descions from 5 years ago ( albeit tough) , and the poor player management by Connolly 10 years ago are for all to see know.
Add the disasterous long term re appointment of a coach with serious personality flaws we are now in a poor state.
Unfortunately the right descions now want take heed until 5 years from now. We will soon have players may wanting to leave ie l Neil and others , which could set us back.
Plus Walters, hill and Fyfe all heading to late 20’s.,
It sounds bleak. That is if you want to be a side with real relevance.
More likely we will plod along like we have over the last 25 years and never be relevant unlike the mob down the road.
Unfortunately freo donot make enough elite decisions , never have and possibly never will.

Freo are run like it’s everyone’s first job in footy.

Poor relations? It’s Chelsea v Leyton Orient. Speaking of which, I think the FA cup is on tonight.

Last night Goodie - missed by a day. We would be a whole lot better if Steve just racked off.

edit: we're better than them, we always will be.

Better people Polly for sure. As for football teams at the moment, not so sure about that.

Jeez Goodie I understand the comparison but couldn't you have picked another lowly team. Leyton Orient went so badly that they dropped out of the English Football League in 2017. The first time in their 100 year history. Sigh.

To be quite honest Exceed, I don't buy into the whole poor recruiting myth. The last 2 flags were won by teams with a similar player group to what we have. A reasonable defense, a key forward and 3 good small/mid size forwards and a couple of elite midfielders. We have all that. Going back to the Hawks 3 flags, they won with a key forward and a couple of Fyfe/Mundy types to kick the goals (Gunston/Bruest ) and Rioli. None of those sides relied on a winning ruckman, which we have but they all played with a game plan to suit the players their recruiters had given them.

They all had big spaces through the middle for their mids and forwards to lead into (which allowed defenders to instinctively put the ball to space when under pressure). Our game plan relies on kicking to a pack on the wing and forcing a stoppage, to allow a couple of forwards to get to the 50. Sometimes we have to force 2 or 3 stoppages to allow this. The game plan falls down when either the opposition <fluke a mark> or we take the footy and try to drive straight into our forward line. Because of our midfield, we do win more of the quick footy across the middle than the game plan allows for, leading to the bomb forward or the 5 kicks sideways.

There is no point having Fyfe winning the ball in the middle at the moment. We are better off if he is winning it inside 50, that is where our weakness is at the moment. Get Blakely into the guts, he will win as much of the footy as Fyfe in there, and with the likes of Walters, Hills, Neale and any 1 of the new players around him will have options for his handpass clear of the pack , which is his strength.

Bring Tabs into the forward line equasion with Fyfe and Mundy down there and oppositions will have to make some real hard decisions which will cut back on their intercept marking options. I haven't mentioned the defense because it is the 1 area where we are in the ascendancy.

And the other common denominator amongst successful teams; ie getting to top 4, GFs etc, is enthusiasm, confidence, joy and PRESSURE.

Enthusiasm, confidence and Joy. I think Ross has KPIed these out of the team.

We play without spirit or common purpose.

I'm just stoked Leyton Orient is cracking a mention, given that is 'my' team (well, my wife's family, which I have therefore inherited). However, I'm uneasy about the comparison, given the 'O's' have only ever been in the top division once (well before I was born), and their best FA cup performance was in the semi-finals in the 70s.....

Enthusiasm, confidence, joy, pressure and playing for each other.

It's been touched on earlier but I personally think it's a worry that players are not prepared to give off to a better option near goals. After not doing the team thing you see our players having a discussion or minor argument as they try and justify why they didn't do what is expected in a team game. Plus it's been happening for most of the season.

Team assists are just as important as the person who scores the goals, and we're not seeing that enough at Freo. Is it confidence, worried about your spot in the team, coaches instructions or what I don't know but you certainly don't seem to see the top sides doing it. It's a worrying sign and it's not so much the youngsters that are doing. More the established players who should know better. Perhaps a sign of knowing we desperately need goals, perhaps a sign of something more? I don't know. But it's happening too often and doesn't look good.

I also don't see our players go to each other enough and give praise when something good has been done. Little excitement or building each other up. We look dispirited.
