TOPIC: Bright Side

There wasn't a lot to take out of tonight but the big shining point for me was the work of Brennan Cox. He had the most marks for the night (10) as well as 4 contested marks, the same as the rest of the team combined. Playing a proper tall in the forward line in a system where we are automatically outnumbered forward seems like a no brainer but doesn't always find the minds of our coaching staff.

I thought he played a very good game in a tough situation and I can see a future for him there. He does seem better suited to reading the play as a backman and floating across but he has proven he can get in a good position in a marking contest and make sure he doesn't lose it. Pace is not his strength but he works hard to get to the drop of the ball which is better than a lot of our forwards.

I hope he gets the rest of the season in the forwardline to learn his craft and become a dominant marking forward. It looks like he's already drastically improved his goal kicking so he's clearly working hard on it, I can't wait to see it pay off.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Agree Biz. Quiet early on but in a terrible team effort he stood up. His best game.

The only other youngster(sort of)who looked good tonight was Ryan. A steal at pick 66.

Lets hope that other people see it also , ( as in R.L. ) but who knows .

We still have 2 more years of the rebuild .

On another point for Cox, did you see that pass to Manic? He was probably our best kick all night and certainly inside forward 50m.

As long as he doesn't think that all he has to do is mark the ball. We really need our big players to try hard to be good all round footballers.

But isn't this the trouble .... We try and make backs into forwards (I think Cox was U18 back), forward flankers expected to be No. 1 forwards or backs (McCarthy, Kersten), rookies expected to be No 1 forward (Tabs), rucks into forwards (Apeness), smalls playing forward on a couple of talls rather than recruiting a real forward, and don't say there are none, we've needed this years ago knowing Pav was going. Yes Sydney play extra man back but have a real forward playing forward.

Bizkit, he is not quick for sure. The real issue is his aerobic capacity; to run to the wing and break back for 80 minutes. A more open minded coach would say, "son don't leave the 50". We don't have that.

My understanding is Lyon does not rate him. Was he playing till Taberner went down?

He won't be with us long term. Shame, something there with those big marks. Bit of a Lockett in the making.

He's a nice bloke but he isn't aggressive on the field. A good mark and a fairly good kick (at least he was), but he's not a solution when so much of our game appears to be focussed on getting the ball.

In my thinking Hodor is a solution.

Lyon did not rate Taberner until he had no other option, the real problem is Lyon, like most back pocket coaches, doesn't rate forwards.

Actually the other relative youngster who has had a great year so far is Langdon.

Another bright side out of the game was that Lyon was thinking about the forward line by placing Sandi there and telling him to stay in the square. Hopefully this will be his focus going forward.

Cox got better the longer the game went and is prob our best contested mark after Tabs & Fyfe. Whether his long term role is down back time will tell, but we need him up forward now.

Our ruck and clearance dominance (+36 & +6, respectively) will start to count once we improve our composure & delivery inside 50 (50 i50’s is very good).

We need another tall forward as the last quarter when Sandi spent pretty much the whole time in there resulted in a score of 5.1. To say we robbed Peter to pay Paul is an understatement, which is why I’d like to see one of Apeness or Strnadica play next week.

Langdon is a jet and they need to lock him in long term. He has genuine pace, good skills and a huge tank.

The backline is definitely improving week on week but when you’re opponent can push hands in the back and swing elbows into blokes jaws without penalty (yes, I’m talking to you Buddy) - then scorelines don’t necessarily reflect the effort. Ryan might yet be one of the best genuine draft steals we’ve had.

Our depth and skill levels are pretty average - not unexpected with 22 new blokes brought in over two seasons - but both should improve over the short to medium term. Mainly as we’ll get back our better players (Hill bro’s, Tabs, Logue, Hodor) and be able to rotate out the kids a bit more.

Crowden gets better each week and Brayshaw, Cerra, Tucker and Banfield all put in strong efforts even if their skills and decision making are not quite to the level consistently needed.

We are simply not competitive against the better sides at the moment (one could argue that for most of our history) and while that makes for unpleasant/disheartening viewing at times - the future looks bright. Managed to un-upset the missus once I calmed down after the game so the weekend is not a complete bust!

Agrree with all of that Jason, except for Crowden last night. not a good one. Love his endeavour and he busts a gut in every contest. Was he used more as a forward or midfielder in the SANFL?
It's our anniversary tomorrow so I'm like you in attempting to get back in the good books.
