The knee jerkers blame the players and want another clear out. Some players are simply being played out of position, or being asked to play one they can't fill.

McCarthy is not a 1st big forward, but he's expected to be one - running from whatever defensive position Lyon stick him in.

The whole teams confidence is rooted. That's not going to change while Lyon has them doing the same shit.

Apparently games are won or lost in the midfield.

We win hit outs 50-14

We win clearances 31-25

Contested possession we break even

Turnovers 79-67 so not a huge difference there but we did butcher it a bit

Based on that we should be a lot closer than a 10 goal loss

50 inside fifties for 7 goals and 10 behinds

The method is wrong and it is compounded by not having a couple of big blokes providing a target. It’s a real shame considering the backline, half backline and midfield we have.

What a bloody waste.

As noted by many, he’s not really meant to be the main man upfront, but If Cammac is going to be the only tall then he needs numbers around feeding off him, and he needs to be targeted more. If he can’t mark he can bring the ball to the ground. Richmond has set up a blueprint for this type of forward structure. Personally, I’d still prefer a more physical presence but given what we have we need to use him better.

Unfortunately we have a coach whose time is up.

It is so sad the club is in this state, and it does no good playing johnno.
It is simply a stubborn coach who refuses to admit his mistakes and board who has allowed the club to be hostage to him.

Taberner was a big loss because he was taking 8-10 marks a game and scoring 1-2 goals.

Richmond have a successful side but only one key forward. The difference is intensity and tackling pressure, something that Freo had in 2013.

Richmond manage to lock the ball in its forward 50, Freo can't. But there's no reason why they can.

We are doing to Cammac what we did to Mayne. Neither are suited to playing on the number 1 defender, and their confidence suffers, That said, at least Mayne had defensive pressure, in spades.

Its not the players, although they played terribly tonight. We tend to say when a Cammac misses from 10 m out direct in front "you cant blame the coach for that" but in fact I do. Freo show all the classic symptoms of a lack of confidence. Its amazing how your skills drop off, your pace drops off and your decision making drops off when you lack confidence.
You cant buy it apparently or go down the shops and get it but you can build it if you are a coach by getting the team to be creative and attacking.
Our confidence is shot for many reasons.

Partly poor selection: For instance we need two key forwards and two ruckmen. Sandi is being run into the ground. He is expected now to play all match in the ruck and then go forward to provide height and then they use Fyfe as the second ruck. Fyfe looked sore tonight, he shouldnt have played, instead they banged him up further. Bring in a bona fide second ruckman and have them rest in the forward line. Cox should play out of the goal square. Fyfe and maybe even Ryan should play forward. Give our midfielders some confidence that if they do have to boot it without looking, as they always do, that we have stars in our forward line. Roly plays our best players in the back line. I would reverse it.

I know Fyfe won a Brownlow out of the midfield but you know he sucks really when compared with the truly creative midfielders. I would say at least 30 of his possessions last week didnt hit a target either by hand or by foot. Tonight we won all those clearances and he continually just boots it any old way forward, rarely looks, even when hes in the clear. I know that is blasphemy and he gets so many of his touches under severe pressure but good coaching could improve that aspect of his play and make him even better.

We need a 6 man forward line. Not only so we have a structure forward of the ball but because we always have plenty of entries yet are always outnumbered. We are also one of the worst forward 50 tackling team. Thats because the opposition out number us in their backline and we end up just corralling and guarding space and can never apply one on one pressure. Roos even mentioned what is so obvious to us all. The opposition simply Chinese Checker the ball using their spare man. We would instantly be a 50% better team overnight if we played an extra forward, could lock the ball in and put some pressure on the opposition backs. I see Rolys solution in the presser is to hold the ball up so that players can run forward and man up but its all too late and that doesnt create positive free flowing enjoyable footy.

Thats whats missing most, if we were losing playing enjoyable footy, Id be more patient.

Any one of these last 100 posts could have been just cut and pasted from 3 years ago, thats the real issue.

How can you criticize Walters for being hungry?? Give me a break, he gets the footy for a start, so let him take the shots, he is our best goalkicker. Why the hell would he pass it to McCarthy, Matera and co when they cant slot them home from 10 meters out??
He and Ballantyne work their arse off applying pressure, chasing down opponents, getting hammered physically while trying to give teammates a bit of space and time to get rid of the footy, yet Ballas is "finished" and Walters is playing for himself. He gets the footy outside 50 and we have no forwards. Does he just pass it to a Swans defender? Saves some time I guess.

If you want to criticize some one for being selfish, have a crack at Neale and Matera, both have the skills to use the footy, but are more worried about racking up possessions and stats and less worried about what happens with those stats. That is also a coaching problem.

Fyfe is being smashed off the ball by opponents with little or no protection from teammates or umpires, when he was run into the chair and then decked after disposal last night a couple of Freo players should have gone in and dealt to Rohan. Take a week if necessary, but don't let them get away with that.

Bite the bullet and play Fyfe forward, employ someone to work on his goalkicking (He used to kick a few goals for Aquinas and Claremont so he knows how) chuck Mundy through the midfield again and get Blakely back in the middle where he belongs. MccCarthy would be much better off alternating through the middle with Mundy, let him run around.

I’m with Rhufus, for those bagging our forwards, how about actually counting the number of opponents they are up against, it’s not just one spare back they have to contend with, it’s often 3:1, 4:2 or 6:3, that’s a coached structure and it’s stupid. Why bother teaching Matera how to tackle all preseason if you then let him be so horribly outnumbered that the guy he’s about to tackle always has an easy outlet to go to.

I would love to see the midfield dominance become useful by having a structure forward of the ball. Right now our clearances just become easy pickings for their defenders to start the next attack.

How do you think I feel. I predicted we'd get a shellacking and backed Sydney by 60 points or more. With 30 seconds to go Sydney forward doesn't make the distance from 35m out and only win by 59!!!
