We have good forwards who can kick goals and they have shown that, our average score at Optus this year is in the 90's.

What is going wrong is our away form which is perplexing. The players on the weekend consistently kicked over leading forwards heads or didn't look left to see players completely alone and capable of either a set shot or easy run into goal. They appear to be kicking to Taberner without realizing he is injured and not playing.

Our forward line has functioned better with Taberner and Walters as they keys with CanMac, Matera and ballas working in support.

But they need the Hill boys to get the ball in. We just need to hang tough until those guys return.

I think we will beat the Roo's this week, but would love to see the Strad get a Guernsey, could be our own 2 meter peter!

The flaw you keep banging on about is our forward entries. We've been through this before, but I'm not sure there is a way to correctly enter the ball when you don't have any forwards who can create separation on a lead, or anyone who can take a pack mark. If there was a silver bullet to entering 50 to spuds, no-one would spend millions of dollars on key forwards.

Take when we have Ballas forward. You can't kick it in the air. You can't put it out in front of him (he's no longer quick enough). You can't want for reinforcements (too slow, and numbers get back). So, I'm not sure what your options are when there is anything resembling decent pressure up the field.

Same for Matera.

Same for Cox.

Same for whoever bloody else is playing down there.

Walters is the only one if you kick it in his general direction something might happen? Why? Because he's an elite forward. But even he can't make things happen on his own. He needs good player around him in the forward line, and we don't have any.

Our team is going through the normal ups and downs of being a rebuilding side. We are struggling in the part of the game where we are weakest for personnel. If anything, it's been too predictable. Often rebuilding sides will lose a couple when they shouldn't, and win a couple they shouldn't. Our games have all gone scratch. Hopefully this week does too.

I doubt that we make the 8 this year. We are simply not playing like a top 8 side.
I would say that we'll probably land somewhere between 10-12.
But I do see hope for better footy as soon as we can get both Hill boys and Bennell on the park.
That will bring exciting times.

I agree Morgan, Walters is one of the few who can reliably win his own ball. Thats why you need Fyfe and Luke Ryan down there as well. Pace, strength and good in the air. These guys one on one are ball winners. A second bona fide resting ruck wouldnt go astray either for the long bomb we tend to love. Why isnt Meek or Jones playing at least until Hodor returns. We saw the difference a resting ruck man made last week in the last quarter.
Also why did we recruit Kersten if when Tabs is injured he doesnt come in?? Its not like we have depth.

I think I agree with Morgan. Is there an answer on the horizon? I can’t see any “fixes” on our list at the moment except for playing Fyfe forward.

People keep talking up strandica. I don’t know anything about him but I think a player that is struggling in the WAFL may not be the answer.

So best case is we draft someone at the end of this year and wait another 3 years for them to develop?

This is in no way a denigration of our first two picks, who more than likely will turn out to be great players, but it was criminally negligent of our recruiting staff to not use at least one of our two top picks on a small forward. I mean who needs goalkickers right?

I thought it was surprisingly candid by Lyon. At some point it gives the Board licence to turf him when they think a premiership in 2020 isn't achievable. I know Yeti is prepared to make that call now, but if Freo were to start next season 4-7, the Board could in good faith say they couldn't see Lyon delivering on his promise without a finals appearance in 2019 and sack him then.

The question should be what does a good rebuild look like in terms of wins? We've gone 4, 8, let's say we get 10 this year. Would we need 13 next season? Often there is a regression year (like 2011) where, for example, injuries can bite.

I’ve been hesitant in getting into this debate after the first post in this thread. No question we’ve been over the game plan, the coach and the players. So there’s been plenty of advice and opinion etc. The 2018 season is far from over. The planning I’d suggests started a few years ago. From the outside it looks bleak, hence the continuos outcry. I’ll stick to my original forecast that we’ll make the 8, because I see upside. After all, that’s achievable.
