As soon as they realize that it was going to work ethics go out the window .

It is all about winning and how much money they can make , people especially women are not relevant .

The big boys club rears its ugly head again .

Maybe ?

Interesting article.

It certainly rings true considering what we have seen from the way the AFL goes about things. Its all about appearance and saying the 'right things' while generally doing whatever generates the most money and gets the desired results.

You can only hope the AFL looks at the situation and responds in a genuine fashion but what are the chances?

It seems like the problem is money, Michelle Cowan wanted more resources to do the job properly and Bec Goddard needed to be paid more to commit the time to do the job properly.

It seems ridiculous when you think of how much money they waste on the male teams, and the league in general, that they're not prepared to invest in a full time coach for their women's team.

Sorry, but Sam Lane just kept saying the same thing over and over again. You would think she would've sat down with either Michelle or Bec and got the real word and their perspective on what needed doing. Pointing out the obvious and speculating on what may or may not be the reason doesn't lead naturally to a conclusion (and a way forward).

The AwFL are really good at throwing money towards something - especially if it appears to be the morally right thing to do. I would've thought it was a simple situation to resolve before it happened.

No doubt the AFLW competition should be full of female coaches - there's got to be more around than the one successful, one failed and one untried coaches named in that rant. Stipulate that each club must have a female senior coach within 5 years or funding will be cut off - force the training up of suitable coaches if that is the right thing to do.

I like the AFLW competition a lot - but whiney journalism gives me the s#$ts. It doesn't help at all, it just stops people reading (and thinking) about it.

The problem with that approach, Polly, is it is doomed to failure.

Read what was said about the lack of funding and I disagree with you about the AFL putting funding into things that 'appear to be morally right'. They will throw funding into something that makes them a quid. They will throw money into things that either make them look good or help them to dodge bad publicity.

There is not much in the way of ethical conduct coming out of the AFL. This is the same organisation that essentially cleared Essendon for running what amounts to be an uncontrolled experiment on players using substances that the club and the AFL seem unable to identify.

Telling clubs to emply women coaches without specifying some form of equality in salaries with their male counterparts will attract only those who find the lower salaries attractive. If you want the best women to apply, you need to pay them. The article lists the salaries paid to the two womens head coaches and that was, in both cases, less than what they could have been paid elsewhere. Cowan took a pay cut to go to Freo and Goddard would have been paid more than 100k pa in the AFP, so she also took a pay cut.

You won't attract the best female talent when you don't pay them more than they would get elsewhere. You don't do that to the blokes so why do that to the women?

What you will get is anything but the best and then people will point to the calibre of women coaches and compare them unfavourably to male coaches.... a self fullfilling prophecy for failure.

Mandate minimum salaries to match the male ass. coaches at least and then see what sort of talent you can attract.

The women's league is a fantastic initiative that needs to be supported and I think everyone can agree to that. In creating the league, the positions of females and the progression of women should be nurtured and promoted. I don't think that's happened so far and it will hurt the competition.

That article doesn't have too many facts regarding the loss of Cowan and Goddard but it's not too difficult to read between the lines. There's clearly something else going on with a coach like Cowan who was ambitious enough to move over to Melbourne to pursue the craft she loved. She was successful coaching and came back home where it looked like she employed a very similar style to the men's side that doesn't translate at all between the differing skill levels. She repeated all the same messages the men's coaches regurgitate in interviews and looked to have little freedom on the field to do what she wanted. Again this is speculation, but things were clearly not going well and she preferred to pull the pin rather than continue doing the thing she loved despite a new contract in front of her. That's a very bad sign.

I hope in the future she is able to come back to the game but her loss is very much Freo's loss, especially considering the poor standard of our current assistant coaches who amount to a bunch of RL's mates and some ex Hawks. I would prefer Cowan over almost every one of them in the men's ranks.

You can't trust the AFL to do anything with honest intentions. When they say they want to grow the game, they are just talking about how much money they can make. They really don't give a rats about anything else, or supporting the good of the game.

If they did, we wouldn't have Sydney Cola, and a stacked GWS.

Why should female coaches be paid the equal of male coaches when the women's season goes for only 5 weeks? Sure there's a preseason of sorts, but Michelle Cowan is unlikely to be putting in anywhere near the time that Ross Lyon or other male coaches do.

Well Spud, why should women take a pay cut to coach?

I'm not suggesting they get paid 1.2 million a year for being unsuccessful but getting paid the same as a male ass coach is not unreasonable.

They don't work for 5 weeks a year. They work longer than that. They should also be given ass coach role during the year. That was what Cowan was doing at Melbourne before we pinched her and was doing it successfully. Now she's lost to the game.

There is nothing politically correct in investing in women's AFL but there is plenty of stupid in driving talent out of the game

If you can't find work for the women's coach in the men's game then you just aren't trying. They should not only have access to how the men's coaching goes down, they should be a part of it and well entwined in the club's day to day all season long. Their role should not be a couple of months a year but 12 months of it and they should be paid accordingly. Cowan is easily good enough to have a say in the way the men's side go about the game let alone being paid the equal of the men's side.

Am I the only one who hates the story of RL walking out on Cowan's speech? It doesn't really matter the reason, it's just a horrible look and a massive blow to Michelle and her ambitions in the game.

Yeti, they were presumably happy enough when they signed up 2 years ago. Maybe they hoped other things would eventually be included such as an assistants role in the men's team. But who knows? At the end of the day, if she's such a great talent she will find a new and possibly better job.

Get Steve to be an innovator, give RoLy the job with the womens team as part of his rehabilitation/punishment, and give Cowan the top job. She won't be playing a .5 man forward line that's for sure.
