TOPIC: The tyranny of distance

Walter the baker The tyranny of distance 5 years 11 months ago #1

Walter the baker
I've benn located in Melbourne for a couple of years and am constantly reminded of the handicap that exists for non Victorian teams. Put fixtures and travel to the side (and they are significant enough factors on their own), the most insidious aspect of the current AFL structure is the lack of voice that non Victorian teams have with the big wigs. Recent stadium arrangements, GF locked in for the MCG, meetings between Victorian club presidents, followed by Clarkson's meeting with Gillian McG are just the tip of the iceberg. Nissy and Steve don't stand a chance against the likes of Kennett and Eddie. The latter have regular high level meetings with AFL and political power brokers. The kind of access interstate clubs can't buy.
The VFL is alive and well.

WTB,

I'm not sure all of that is entirely true.

Yes, we can see the VFL is alive and well as you say and nobody could really deny that but I still think access to AFL House is possible for non Victorian presidents / coaches etc It just requires a little more effort.

A pres can jump on a plane if needed and be in contact with the power brokers. Harder for coaches of course but not impossible.

Overall, while it requires more effort and probably planning, interstate clubs can't really sit back and say its all too hard. They just need to be more active than they currently appear to be.

On the bright side, the AFL Chairman is a former Freo Board Member.

The answer is a rebel league.

We invite the clubs from south Australia, NSW and Queensland and start up new teams in the Northern Territory and Tasmania.

The slime would not be invited and probably wouldn’t want to be involved anyway.

This would be a 9 team competition that could play each twice home and away. Then have an extended finals series with the top 4 playing each other twice and the bottom clubs fight it out for a wildcard spot in the finals. The best 2 teams playing off in a GF.

The TV rights deal would be huge and the clubs would get a bigger piece of the pie than currently which could be used to attract the best players in the country.

Cmon twiggy you are doing it with rugby let’s give the VFL the old heave ho just like the you did with the ARU.

Given Rosich's hamfisted medal 'sponsorship' farce, you reckon he's capable of booking himself on a plane and talking turkey with AFL powerbrokers?

Besides, don't the WAFC still own both clubs and tell them what to do? So long as West Coast are happy, that is.

Yes, the WAFC are still the only member that actually has a vote. Fact is, Joe Public of voting age (of course) is in charge of the WAFC - we pay for it and elect the government minister responsible for it. McHenry and co seem to forget this - it's not a corporate fiefdom, but a fully owned and managed company of the people of this state.

Right on Pol.

The eagles were a corporate entity. They actually were funded by a public float and some prominent business men. It went belly up, the government bought out most of the note holders, the business men refused to sell and leveraged the govt. one now runs the WAFC others ran it or the eagles before him.

They hated when we came along, we were hobbled from the start and our constitution continues to ensure we are controlled by the WAFC which due to several interesting appointments are stacked with prominent eagles. It’s a cartel.

As a supporter you have no direct voting right or say. Our chair And many board members are directly appointed by the WAFC, which is controlled by Eagles note holders.

Then our board let’s look at them, a few business men with more interest in resume enhancement than our club, few ex captains and even the member elected positions are held by ex captains because the average supporter is either too stupid or too apathetic to vote for someone who doesn’t have a vested interest.

The whole thing is a disgrace!

why are we descibed aS INTERSTATE CLUBS ? we live here from our perspective vic clubs are the interstate clubs . the present naming just panders to their sense of " its really our comp still but we need the money that non vic clubs bring in"

Like the plan KK. I'd actually invite a couple of the better Vic clubs to join as well.
