I'm finally getting down to Aus for the rd 17 match against the Power and the rd 18 game against Bombers (first live game since 2013 GF)
Could I get some advice on where is the best place/block to sit at Optus, and also Etihad
and obviously the best pre-game pub?

Thanks

I'm in Block 116 at Optus. There are two seats next to me that are available for purchase each week. Block 116 is ground level, on the wing. Good seats.

Best pub before a game: Maggie Dicksons - Edinburgh.

If it's any help, here's the virtual map

fremantlefc.io-media.com/web/index.html

It seems like the sun is pretty bad on the upper levels behind the goals at the eastern end.

Merc's seats are spectacular. We graced each other with our various presence the other night. It's an awesome spot to watch the game from, you're almost on the boundary line but you're a couple of metres up from the surface so you can see clear over to the other side.

I went to the derby and sat almost opposite Merc on the other wing, maybe 8 rows from the top of the top level. The view from there was insane. You can see the boundary line below you. Of course you can see the whole ground and if you're the sort who likes to watch play form you'd love it. It seems every seat has the same viewing quality... others might confirm from different points but to me, getting line of sight to the boundary from top rows is a decent achievement.

The Irishman who came with me and mumbled incoherently in Corkian reckons its the best stadium he's been to and that includes most of the big name grounds in the UK including Twickenham.

I've never been inside Etihad mate, so I can't help you there.

PT, agree with others that there are plenty of great spots to sit at the new gaff. I'm up on the top deck on about the 50m line (city end) and the view of the play is great. That said, if you're coming for a one-off game, I reckon you might be better served sitting closer to the action to get the full weight of the atmosphere. As for pre-game venues, keep an eye on the 'Morgan reviews...' thread for my comprehensive reviews of pre-game venues.

I've been to Etihad a bunch of times, but I tend to just get a general admission ticket and stand at the back of the ground-level blocks.

As the Bombers game is a Saturday afternoon, for a proper West Melbourne experience I would recommend taking some time in the late morning to walk around the Queen Victoria Markets and get a bite to eat there, walk over to the Drunken Poet (which is probably my favourite Irish bar outside of Ireland) for a few pints, then take the leisurely 15 minute walk through Flagstaff Gardens down to the ground.

Do as Morgan says, but more specifically have the bratwurst (or if you're me, the weisswurst) in a bun with sauerkraut and mustard from the joint at the far southeastern corner of the Vic markets.

Sauerkraut is one of the most elaborate practical jokes inflicted on the world by the Germans after putting their salty spin on the old mongol winter preserver.

Visit the markets, yes, and buy cheese.

Melbourne does some fantastic yum cha. I can recommend gold leaf a very short walk to docklands. Full as a boot you won't need a dodgy overpriced four-and-twenty at the ground.

Sauerkraut is an international treasure. Do you honestly prefer the weird-arsed far eastern fermentation?

And so began what later became known as The Great Pickle Wars.

This seems like an appropriate point to mention this. I bought a "Classic Hotdog" the other week at the football. It came covered in onion.

Now, to me a classic hotdog is "bun - sausage - sauce" and I'm not a hotdog historian but I would assume the onion was a later day addition to the hotdog. They are misrepresenting their product and a call probably needs to be made to the ACCC.

They are terrible hotdogs either way. Bratwurst? Weisswurst? I'm not a fan of any sausage that can be identified with a name.

Which explains why you bought something called a classic hotdog.

Exactly. I expect something red, drowning in tomato sauce.
