TOPIC: Forward Line Structure

Tabener re signed late last year so maybe the plan was to give him more time in the ma goos to practice his craft rather than getting smashed by better quality defenders.
I know a lot of people don’t like Lyon but I don’t think he’s stupid.

DD&S right there, blame the coach and you think it makes sense.

The worst thing he could do for his career at this stage is play a game of football.

He played a very good game against Essendon. Every other game was more of the same from previous seasons - lot's of opportunity with not much return.

I don’t care what type of player McCarthy is, he needs to be more physical and have a presence. Why are people so willing to smash D Pearce, Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Matera, Ballantyne and more recently Johnson and even Sandilands in some circles yet McCarthy is delivering nothing.
Matera for example has had 8 games for the club, if there is one position that can be a low possession place to play it is small forward, particularly if bigger blokes don’t provide a contest.

Matera starts centre bounces regularly behind the square...not sure how effective this has been but it seems ross has other ideas for him than as a small fwd.
As for Taberner, he has marked strongly in contests in all games this year. A precious gift. Sending him back to peel may have had an impact or it could be just a natural progression that would have happened anyhow, whilst gaining invaluable experience and match-hardness.

The importance of Taberner to our forward can no longer be ignored. We only need to look at the last JLT game to see he knows where to go to get to the ball and nullified the likes of MCGovern and other intercept marks in the eagles backline. More importantly he gave the likes of canmac, ballas, Walters and other forwards opportunity to kick crumb goals.

Having that one big dominant forward even if they are only kicking 1 to 3 goals a game is Paramount. Cats have Hawkins, tigers have Reiwolt, demons Hogan etc, not too many have multiple kpps running around. So the loss of Taberner was enormous to the forward line.

Our defensive units clearly building into a formidable block and the midfield is a clear strength so getting Taberner and Walters into that forward line is critical!

Sure McCarthy has kicked 11 goals as compared to 9 he has also had 40+ less disposals and given away an additional 10 free kicks. Working from my phone so difficult to access stats but my guess would be he is shaded in most of these.
My post was never intended to be a defence of Matera more about why does McCarthy not cop his fair whack and people justify his poor performance.

McCarthy cops plenty of criticsm.

Most of it isn't based in reality, just plucked from the collective hallucination that most footy fans seem to either suffer or enjoy, depending on your viewing angle.

McCarthy plays better in a roving forward role. His field kicking is usually excellent and his set shots are spot on. If you had to pick a player to take a shot on the siren to win from outside 50 on an angle it'd be him. He had a bad night the other night with a lot of his efforts being, shall we say Merc, nearly good enough. Nearly doesn't cut it, of course. Personally I'm at a loss to explain or describe how poorly Freo went against the Saints and as no-one else has commented on the outrageous umpiring during the 3rd quarter that got the Saints back in the game with exquisitely timed frees turning momentum time and again, I guess we can just go with the flow here and blame CamMac.

If we had Tabs fit and firing he'd be taking that key defender and CMac would have more freedom to roam the wide open spaces where he can answer the weird call only he can hear on the wind and in the grass. That being the case I can't answer your cleverly pointed questions about playing another tall forward to help out and have to refer you to the coaching panel who will no doubt hold another master class in press conference evasion techniques soon and clear it all up for you there...

but Cox goes alright. He can hold a mark, he can kick a goal, he can fill in in the ruck. He might not be super quick across the ground *cough* but he's pretty dependable and he's got some smarts about him. He makes footballer type choices. So we're not exactly bereft of options.

I'd like to see a coach, preferably ours but any of them, move two forwards out of following the ball and station them inside the forward half all game. Look how many games have everyone on the ball now... so drag two of yours out of there and they'll take two of theirs with them and that's 4 less players congesting play. Just do that and the game would change... win possession and hoof the thing 50m forward to an actual player instead of space. Bang, you'd have to defend up there.

Anyway.. Freo aren't playing to any sort of strength up forward and it's not just about the players.

You picked the eyes out of that one Shane.

GS, Cox slow across the ground (cough)!!! It takes him 90 seconds to turn his head to where the ball went, then the rest of his body has to follow. But if he keeps holding his marks, that won't matter. We need someone like Ballas near him for when the ball is turned over .

What are you doing for the rest of the year, GS??
Do you get Saturdays, Sundays and the odd rare Friday night off?
Can you fit in travel every second weekend?
If you answer yes to the above questions, we might have just the job for you.
