TOPIC: On Another Matter

Your agenda on Bond is driven by your own narrative and that blinds you to reality...

Bond has overseen some pretty decent recruiting as footy manager among all the unseen work that goes with the role. He's clearly diligent and not a limelight seeker... as he was when captaining the club. Criticising the recruiting over recent years ignores a few factors when it gets trotted out... the distorted drafts due to two start ups and then the availability of certain player types favoured by the angry mob when trotting out the attack.

The deal extension for Lyon hangs over the whole club and who knows how those strings were pulled. I have days where I want nothing less than a complete clean out of the footy department for no reason aside from the love of a flame thrower fully fuelled and the sound of the choppers coming in under the early morning sun... but I don't think Bond deserves the shizen flung his way in here.

As for Neesham... I was just as much a fan of the Little General in his days here as anyone and his work with Clontarf has been heroic since he left. I think he's better served where he is and the work he's doing there is of far more value than putting up with the sniping and petty politics disguised as AFL footy.

Revising the past won't work. Cold hard decisions made with head up and eyes open are needed now and a diligence to sincerity with regard to stated values vital. It would make a nice change, after all.

Fair enough, Guy, but my take on things is that Bond has a far too conservative and defensive attitude to the way the club approaches all aspects of the game. We take tribunal decisions without saying anything, we accept umpiring displays like we copped in the derby (and we get far more of that treatment than any other club in the comp, despite what some here think), the footy manager could take some heat off by questioning these things. And I am sure Bond has influence on game day tactics.

As for recruiting, I do think that in the last couple or 3 years we have gone back to recruiting footy players, from about 2008 or so on we went for athletes, basketballers and the like without considering their footy intelligence, and it hurt us for the last 3 or 4 seasons. That is why the young players drafted in the last 2 drafts have come straight into the side. They have the instinctive ability to play footy, no matter what age or number of pre-seasons . Now if Bond is in charge of recruiting he is culpable for that period which was not successful.

As for Neesham, the club at the moment does not seem to have the wise footy heart that could have redirected some of our attempts to go down the wrong road. Can you suggest anyone else with the acumen that we could put in as the "wise old man" of the club?
