I think the 'professional' style is caused by two things which come down to people who can no longer play the game wanting to control the game.

Firstly coaches. There are too many of them and they are constantly in control of what happens on the ground. The interchange is a revolving door, the runner is constantly on the move, they have real-time statistics and software identifying trends and triggering pre-planned moves. The influence of the players is mostly physical now so you get less innovation and risk because the middle aged men in the box with the mortgages and the investment portfolio would like a nice stable work environment.

If you took away the runner, put the coach and his assistant at ground level and took away their computers then I think you'd have a more footballer orientated game and a better spectacle.

The second thing is the development of kids. The recruiting system is very homogeneous. The same bloke has been in charge of the academies for decades and he churns out footballers that meet what coaches think they want. They also put them into the system at a very young age and indoctrinate them in the same way of playing football. So we've got a league filled with tallish running players who have been trained from 14 to follow instructions to the letter and not think for themselves. You still get the freaks coming through and some players sneak through outside the system but for the most part Tom Sheridan is the ideal footballer.

I've a mate who has a theory about the creative brilliance of so many aboriginal players which avoids the genetic can of worms (though personally I think there must be some hereditary ability to manipulate space-time which also plays a role).

It's basically that they are spared this kind of overcoaching as youngsters. Once their talent is identified and they're placed "in the system", it's pretty hard to coach that creativity out of them. So they retain their x factor, and as long as they can meet their skin fold KPIs and kinda toe the line of their coach's game plan, we get to watch them play the sort of footy that got us interested in the game in the first place.

Get rid of no third man up. Umpire pick up the ball and throw it up, straight away, no waiting. Boundary throw in, the same, no looking and waiting for rucks...throw it in! Do not introduce last touch over the line means a free kick to opposition....it is an oval shaped unpredictable ball...I would hate to see a kick after the siren for a win after some poor mug happened to get a fingertip on the ball before it went out. Nonsense! Do not get rid of prior opportunity. Protect ball-getter at all times. If the bloke has had a chance to get rid of it, ping him. If the ball gets knocked out in the tackle, play on.
I loved footy back in the day, I will always love footy (I think). It is different now, but there are still great marks, better kicks, incredible handballs under immense pressure, more pressure (means there are less lazy bastards playing). Trying to make the game more free-flowing with less congestion with some of the suggestions regarding zones, paying free kicks for tackles etc...may be a step too far. It is a test of attrition, the better team will eventually get the ball out and link up to score. I love the pressure and effort, the team that does it all for longer and harder, wins. Don't forget the great skills needed under the pressure and congestion. Watching that preseason square pitch stuff got a little boring very quickly. Don't change the game so much that it ever resembles that! The 60s and 70s were great...one on one contests, drop kicks, high marks, front-runners galore....but we have evolved.

Depending on who you're talking to its seems the game is either too congested, needs 6 forwards, 6 mids and 6 defenders or there is nothing wrong with the game.

So I agree.

I agree with Shane, FDB And Suker. All good points. The game is over coached as Shane wrote, get rid of the runners and have the coach at ground level.

FDB makes sense in regard to players being vanilla in development and how our indigenous players may still have some X factor. It’s also why I like players like Darcy and McGovern who look like weightlifters not body builders. Plugger Lockett and Greg Williams wouldn’t have got drafted by the clowns run the game now.

I hate the nominating ruck man rule, just bounce the ball asap it will stop teams getting numbers around the ball and lessen congestion.

I also hate the deliberate out of bounds rule. I think it sucks and is too interpretative and poorly umpired because of this.

I also hate the draft age being 18, I would prefer it to be 21. It allows young guys to mature before being moved around the country and also would mean our best 18-21 year olds are in the wafl increasing the quality of our grass roots competitions.

Overall though I think leave the game be, it has a habit of sorting it self out as coaches and players adapt and innovate v

I think they should get rid of the 50m penalty and reduce it to 25m.

I agree with Quasi's agreeing's but regarding the article, I think they are barking up the wrong tree. So what the game has become an arm wrestle at times and the scores are lower. This just ads to the spectacle of the game. I hate watching a football match where each team goes goal for goal, with no defense like a bl@@dy basket ball game... Now that's boring football.

Agree with most of those ideas posted and I do miss the fact that all players are so similar in what they say to the media and what is expected of them.
I miss the characters of the game, but nowadays if you stray from the norm you're in trouble.

Who was the last player that was a bit different? Akermanis?

How about playing a push in the back free kick occasionally, would make the tackler a bit more accountable for retarding the player, not jumping on them and driving them into the ground which seems to happen a lot in stoppages.

No doubt over coaching is part of the problem but whilst a player is physically capable of getting to every contest the congestion around the ball remains.

I firmly believe the rugby/ soccer sub model works for our game. Whereby you have eight back ups for the starters but when you are off you are off. You are going to keep your very best on the ground at all times so you need to manage them with a rest in the forward pocket.

So blokes will start playing positions more and kicking will be more prevalent and so will the one on one contests.

What you're after there is more skilled and interesting players staying on the ground longer but you're doing is creating an incentive for coaches to play players who can run for longer.

If you want to keep coaches in control but influence their behaviour you have to remove the risk of making a mistake because the driving factor behind them is self preservation.

If you limit the game to 8 interchanges and no coming back on, you'll start of whole series of shananigans where coaches have a mass swap of players in the last quarter after their thugs have 'accidentally' injured half of the opposition players.

Then you bring in the good guys for a quick burst.

Might was well call 20twenty AFL and be done with it.

The fact is, no matter what the rules are, the coaches will try to find an edge to exploit. The more you change things, the more they find exploits. Let the game alone and many of these things will work themselves out over time
