I didn't sit around to watch any post game comments. There's little point in that on a good day anyway...and I got the dishes done.
I watch a bit of Fox and there's been a lot of discussion among various commentators about skill levels and the supposed 'crisis' in footy right now centred on numbers around the ball most games and poor disposals...
it's not just Freo. One thing Jonno Brown said last week on that Paul Roos show with a couch in it, was he feels the players are having to think too much during a game and it leads to mistakes. That's been a complaint of ours since Lyon took over Freo... the game plan appears too complex, etc etc. I think too much is expected of players who may not yet have the skill level or speed to execute and once that starts the whole team performance falls away rapidly. Put it another way... trying to be too clever isn't clever.
It's a no win situation as every other team is trying to be clever as well... but Freo got shown up badly today and if players weren't following instructions in the first quarter then the coach needs to understand why they're not listening to him. That's accountability.
Also... going in with a 5 man forward line and selecting Cox was a mistake. Should have let them structure up and play to the extra tall. It worked in the third.
End of the day, we're still stuck with a defensive minded coach by the look of it, when the game screams attack first and know how to defend. There's a difference.
