Jason, we only played 1 good quarter of footy, Richmond were pretty bloody ordinary themselves until 10 minutes into the last quarter, and only some pretty dodgy interpretations of holding the ball/illegal disposal and loose marking interpretations kept them in front.

But discussing just one facet of the game, Our players are learning not to kick inside 50 if there is no-one in there, but that stuffs up our options and leads to the turnovers. Look at what worked in the 3rd quarter, Cox in the forward line and leading at the footy, and frees being paid. The first of those reasons, Cox forward and playing as a forward, is due to coaching, and should have been done at the first bounce. The second may well have been an aberration, but it sure helped.

Our mids had the skill to win the clearances easily, so they can't be blamed, our backs fought against the odds, so they have excuses. Our tall forwards (except for the third quarter ) played up on the wing, did they disobey coaching instructions? If so why were they not dragged? McCarthy continues to stand and wrestle opponents while some other opponent floats in and takes the uncontested mark.

Cox and Fyfe showed him (and Lyon) what happens if you run and jump at the footy. He has had enough time back from his missed year for that to not be an excuse any more. Drop him or swap him for Fyfe and give us a couple of targets up forward. That application of tactics is the coaches job, that is why some of us believe the coach should be relieved.

We have youngsters in the team and they are having a real crack which is good to see.

What I observed today is that a good team knows where and when to run. When to run forward in waves and provide options. When to roll players back into defence and forwards that know how to create space for their teammates and where to lead.

We just seem to follow the ball all over the ground and when we get it there is no fluency because we are badly out of position. The effort is there but we are not playing as one unit. A lot of panic kicks and handballs because our players don’t have a sense of where to go and find a teammate.

I would admit this is a difficult thing to coach and teams get good at moving the footy after they’ve played together for a while and built confidence.

The coaches got something out of our team at half time and should be commended for that but it is disappointing it took this long to make the changes.

We used to play a certain way in 2013 where we could force the ball forward stoppage after stoppage and then lock it in the forward line until we scored. We also scored a fair bit on the rebound after forcing a turnover. I’m not sure if this is the way to go about it now and continually kicking high up the line and allowing the opposition to roll back and take intercept marks is clearly not working.

The coach has openly said ball movement is a key focus but whatever methods are being used to teach the players how to improve in this area are not working. I find it unfathomable the players are disregarding the coaches instructions and kicking up and unders to the opposition defender multiple times in a quarter.

We are short of a key forward which makes it tougher to go forward but the game isn’t that complicated.........it as though our players either aren’t understanding instructions or the right ones aren’t being given. Either way that is a coaching issue and must be fixed.

Last week I felt angry because I thought the umpires had taken the game away from Freo.
Now I'm angry because I was wrong. Umpire bias is irrelevant when the team plays rubbish footy, week in, week out.
Time for a change.

Dockermus, in the 3rd quarter the umps came out and gave us lots of frees. Richmond were clearly a better side than us, but with the aid of the umps we outscored them in that quarter.
In the last quarter, I saw a passage of play where 3 Richmond players in quick succession had fresh airies, and not one htb was called. As far as I know, a fresh airy is always htb, as its an incorrect disposal and its not jarred loose in the tackle or anything forgivable like that.

And by the way anyone who believes our issues are a result of being beaten beaten in the midfield have a look at the stats for contested possession, clearances both out of the centre and stoppage. That is cleary not the issue here.

No offence Rog, but I do find it amusing when we, or anyone for that matter cops a pasting like that, and still manages to find some umpiring decisions that didn't go their way.
Richmond actually have one of, if not, the worst free kick differentials in the competition and their on top. In such a one sided match we actually won the free kick count.

But it is KK. Winning the midfield doesn't just mean getting it out of the middle. It means moving it around until you deliver to a forward in a position to score, or you get into a position to score yourself. What makes for a damaging midfield is the ability to go through the middle, as Richmond did. Very rarely could we stop them doing that, and that is how they scored so much from turnovers, by going through the middle really fast.

KK, you are half right.

We won the clearances , both in the middle and at the stoppages.

Then we turned the ball over 84 times. Turnovers hurt more than any other stat because instead players getting ahead of the ball they are suddenly well behind it. Recovering takes time and energy and always costs scores against us

Fair enough, CA. Maybe Richmond have such a bad free kick count is because they constantly get caught with the ball and use dubious methods to dispose of it? I was just saying that when the umps started seeing decisions to us, all of a sudden we didn't look like the total losers we did earlier.

Our delivery into the forward line was terrible, it doesn’t help that we only have one tall and he’s probably a second or third tall in most teams. He’s trying to stay back to give structure but his game is running up the ground at the ball not wrestling an opponent. We’ve got to keep playing the kids in the middle as other than Pearce and Sherridan we dont really have anyone else. With tucker and hughes I think you keep playing to see whos thes best and then move the other on at the end of the year. We have a heap of smalls running around in the wafl, I dont think we can keep them all, we need to keep trying to unearth stars. Our depth has always been a problem, we always seem to get too many of the same type. Our young key players have been unlucky with injuries, but we do seem to persist with injured players too long. I think if we cant get Apeness or Bennel right they need to be moved on. Sandy(maybe), johnson, pearce and spurr will not be with us next year but the replacements arent quite ready. We’ve got to continue on this year with minor tweaks and hope everything starts to gel.

As someone else mentioned, it appears Johnno was not our problem. Indeed I'd say we would have done better with him in the side. Hughes made at least one massive blunder, but I still rate him and hope he gets a regular gig until those returning from injury force him out. Don't know about Cox, but you'd probably give him another run before making a decision.

On the bright side, we're not St Kilda who are one step worse than lamentable.

Freo are also flat track bullies at Optus Stadium and will crush those poor buggers next week. Hopefully by more than 77 points.

So why do we turn it over?

Bad skills?

No options forward?

Too much pressure from the opposition?

If we are winning a fair bit of the footy we should be kicking a fair few goals. We kicked 32 points today granted against good opposition.

My point is there we are not able to convert possession into scoring. Some believe this is due to a midfield defiency and having some young guys running around in the middle. Maybe it is but my observation is we don’t have players in the right positions to create opportunity at the right time.

We could be sharper with our skills and we will come up against good teams that force turnovers but fundamentally
our problem is players not having an option at the right time to create an attacking chain of possession.

That is a coaching issue.

CA, I might agree with you on the free kicks, but our players are constantly pinged for incorrect disposal when tackled, but when they lay a tackle it is almost always play on. This leads to the rushed and poor decision making going forward through implied pressure. The same as the reduced time before play on is called. We have also seen 5 or 6 obvious 50 meters not paid to Freo in the last 2 weeks. Also seen opponents clearly out of bounds, right in front of the umpire, and let go, resulting in goals on most of them. Taken in isolation, yes, "stop making excuses bro". Looking at the trend however, it is affecting us, especially our young players.

There have been very few of these decisions go against our opponents in the season so far. RR, I don't think Richmond were treated harshly by the umps in the third, witness Martin getting away with not giving the ball back to Langdon early in the quarter. The umpiring was pretty even handed in that third quarter, and we were able to play footy as we should play it. And were competitive. Why do the umpires not apply these interpretations all game? They certainly went back to allowing Richmond the benefit of the doubt when tackled in the last quarter, while hammering us when tackled.
