My Intel last week advised McGovern would delay talks until seasons end. So that was a tick for the source.

He also advised Freo have a 6 year deal on the table which fits McGovern's terms. Additionally whilst not advising a number he said if the deal gets done it would make him the highest paid player at Freo, ahead of Fyfe marginally.

If we did get him it would ensure we had the best defensive unit in the competition by a country mile.

The next target would then be Mitch McGovern.

I understand that you pay a premium for free agents, but I wouldn't want to pay that much for McGovern, unless we are able to front-load it somehow.

McGovern was a late bloomer, but I think part of the reason he wasn't picked up was because he doesn't have the traditional physique of a professional footy player. I'm likely going to fall into the same trap here, but looking at him do you really want to be paying him $1 million a year when he's 32? He could have the girth of his old man by then.

As I said a few days ago Freo will definitely make a bid (and a substantial one) for McGovern. You know it makes sense. West Coast are in a squeeze this year and next. They have McGovern, Lycett and Gaff as FAs this year and Kennedy and Natainui next year. They will not be able to keep them all and afford them all. And all will be targeted by other clubs big time for sure.
Freo has the advantage with McGovern as he is a local lad and his father has links with Freo. (I can use the word lad relative to my own time on this planet).

McGovern is not, from next year on in his career, worth the same salary as Fyfe, Walters, Neale, Hamling, Pearse, and probably not much more than the likes of Blakely, Darcy, and the Hills. Why pay him that much when you could get 2 good players for the same price. We have a good young defense, and the furphy of being able to throw Hamling, or Pearce forward if we had McGovern is just that. They are defenders in a very good defense. Leave them there.

If we don't need him, then ask yourself this - this take him out of the Eagles defense and put him in ours and what happens?

We win last weeks derby, and we will last years derby where we kicked poorly for goal but he killed us with his intercept marking.

He is worth every dollar of that $1M price tag and more!!

Just because we make him look good doesn't mean he's worth a million a year. As has been seen in other games, he's good overhead and poor below the knees.

Had we continually kicked to his strength, he wouldn't look so good. I prefer getting two good defenders for the price of one. We would have won the last game had we played smarter. It wasn't hard to predict

We certainly don't have many players at all that are good above overhead, particularly his size.. Ryan is a good intercept mark but a completely different type of player.
He can play forward and has performed better doing that for the slime than any backman that we have tried up forward.

Hackdorn claimed we are offering $1.25 million a year for 6 years and also want to snare Hogan and younger McGovern. 1.25 mill is crazy. How do we fit all this in our cap and pay Fyfe Neale and others. He claimed sandi and Johnny’s retirement would free up the money, but wouldn’t they be on the veteran arrangement where half is excised from the cap.

I can see McGovern is a good player but I wouldn’t sell the farm for him.

The defence is the least of our problems.

Quasi, think they changed the salary cap rules on the veterans. Think only 100k a year is exempt now.
