TOPIC: Rising Star

I’m still sticking with AB to win the RS. Yeah no nomination as yet but it’s a matter of time. AC will be a star. He’s just a natural footballer and as for our pick 7 or 8 in the 2016 draft on Logue. Thumbs up to that too. I’ve been tracking SPS since Bizkit was beating the drum on this bloke and that we missed an opportunity. News flash, he’s no good. ATM his impact for Carlton is at best sporadic. So no lost there. While Logue is currently only 2-3 weeks away from resuming training, he’ll complement AP and Hamling with aplomb.

Sorry but you don't win the RS from just being nominated. You have to have played well for the majority of the season. There are already nominated players that have done that. Check the top 3 from the from last year. All had been nominated by round 4.

A good, honest player he is but I can't think of a game this year when Brayshaw has shown anything that made you sit up and think-wow, that was special.
Banfield has easily been the best of our first year players but I don't know if he's too old for the award.

So who are you dropping from the backline to make way for Logue? Pearce, Hamling, Hill, Wilson, Ryan, Blakely?

Statements like that Jezza are why no one is able to take your opinion on things too seriously. You tend to make it up as you go to support a preconceived notion you already hold and back it up with loose facts that paint a tiny portion of the story and are in no way indicative of the actual situation.

It's that sort of thing that has me questioning whether you actually watch other teams and players. SPS came off no pre-season and with a small body to play on a rubbish sides half forward flank with lots of time spent on the bench. From there, he managed to have a huge impact and even earn 3 brownlow votes in one game as a kid in his first season but sure, 'he's no good'. If you watched him play you would have seen fantastic movement and awareness with exquisite disposal and it has been no different this season.

Unfortunately he is still spending most of his time forward but Bolton has proven he is trying hard to protect all his kids so I'd imagine it's part of that. In any case he's still had some very good games like the one against Gold Coast earlier this year. To rubbish SPS but give a 'thumbs up' to Logue after that average season just proves how ridiculous you're willing to be on the subject just to abide by your original ill thought out opinion.

As for this year's draftees, I see AB as like another carlton player, Marc Murphy. Works hard on the inside and is a relatively accurate short kick but not quite that game breaking mid you need from a top 2 selection. His season so far is no where near rising star calculation but he might be able to pick it up as the season goes on and he gets more mid time. AC is the one we have to hope becomes the star mid though. He has a fair bit of talent and moves well with a little more poise and pace along with better disposal.

As I mentioned in this thread, Stephensen is the mid with the most potential and ability and it's been enjoyable watching him play and break games open from the get go. I would have liked it to have been in Freo colours but he's still good fun to watch and maybe he wouldn't have that freedom to attack and break lines under RL anyway.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

SPS is no good is a crazy comment. He's played 20 games in a crap team. The only players to have played more are McLuggage with 21 and McGrath with 26. What are they thinking at that club giving a no good player that many games?
Even if Logue was fit at the start of the year it was debatable that he would have got a game straight up. It's not as though he set the place on fire last year. When he went back to Peel he struggled to have any influence in games there.

Haselby was no jaiden stephenson.. and was no pavlich.. but still managed to win a rising star, an all australian and a few roscos.. Haselby got to work in the stoppages and could still push foward and slot a few goals when needed.

When you look at team balance, we have a couple of handy players on the outside with b hill, langdon and s hill. Cerra will be a handy addition when he graduates high half forward school. Mundy has this year and maybe 1 more next year but next year if he plays on will be spent as a forward most likely with small stints through the midfield. The biggest weapon in brayshaw and cerra is not now but 2-3 years time where if they can both start having more impact around the stoppages then it releases fyfe to do a whole heap of hurt where ever he likes..

Like I said I've followed SPS closely. In 7 games he's average 11kicks, 5 HBs, 5 Contested Possessions etc etc. In a time when Carlton needs him most, he goes missing. For a No.6 draft pick I think, he's not getting any bouquets from me. Sorry but you got this one wrong Biz. And as for him spending time forward, in 7 games thus far he's spent 65% TOG in the defensive half. I gather Bolton he's playing him out of position then. Lets revisit this issue at season's end and just maybe I could be wrong. He's a mid we don't need at Freo. And we certainly don't need a small forward. So picking Logue at 8 was brilliant. He just needs to get his body right and at 193cms, 95 kgs I reckon we've got a KPP that many thought we need more of. BTW he's out of contract at the end of 2018, so I hope they sign him up pronto.

You're all over the shop. You point at his stats as if they are bad when they are very good for both a half forward (obviously in a side getting belted more often than not, your possessions are going to be in the defensive half but as someone who's watched closely, I'm sure I didn't need to point that out) and a bloke who's played 20 games. Those stats also come from another injury interrupted pre-season where he's missed the first game of the season, played 36% game time in Rd 2 and built up from there to about 70% game time (65% against the Crows this weekend). That's effectively more than a quarter sitting on the bench and then coming on to run through a forwardline that is barely seeing the footy and he is still averaging 15 touches (mostly kicks too rather than dinky little handpasses).

In no way has that been a bad selection by Carlton and to claim Logue at 8 was brilliant is just plain wrong when he's barely a KPP and expected to be the third tall at best. He's achieved nothing yet and has not shown anywhere near as much as SPS. He has no rising star nomination or brownlow votes and is best known for giving away easy free kicks to the saints and not knowing how to play footy. He has played half the games of SPS and won't get a game ahead of our other 2 young key defenders so doesn't have a locked in future at the club other than being an early pick. Cox and Duman are further developed at this point for the third tall defender role so he may be even further down the pecking order.

Having said that I don't want that to be the case and hope he can come on and show something but if you're basing anything on past performance, it's ludicrous to suggest Logue is in the same ball park as SPS atm. I don't think you've followed this closely at all or watched any games, just grabbed random stats that don't actually support your view at all. You should look harder.

Yeah nah. Without going into the hours I spent watching games, less just say that I have an interest in SPS’s development. The drafting in 2016 by Carlton and last year for that matter and us more to the point, will lead to success. Whether that can be fast tracked by Roly or not will unfold. Both our gems in AB and AC will have a much greater impact than SPS at Carlton. In comparison, our kids are playing in a much better term. But at this stage, I’m not excited by SPS and what he’s producing though it’s a pity Logue’s body is slowing his progress down.

"And we certainly don't need a small forward" WTF!!!

Sometimes you just stun me with the things you say. I would kill for a great small forward. We have a champion in Walters who unfortunately has had injury worries throughout his career, but is also needed as an onballer.

After that we have a 31yr old in Ballas who is struggling to have the impact he was once did, and Matera who has little influence and was struggling to get a game at GC before we picked him up.

You can't get everyone in the draft but I for one would love to have been able to get someone like Ryan, or a half forward like Stephenson, but apparently we wouldn't need them anyway.

Having seen Nat Fyfe’s ruckwork at the weekend I can imagine Logue operating in the ruck and resting forward in tandem with Sean Darcy.
Sandi is busting a gut this year it what could possibly be his last and there’s not a lot of experienced players to back him up or replace him next year.

Geez first we don’t recruit enough KPP now it’s small forwards. Ryan is nothing but a highlight reel with few highlights. Sorry CA but we’ve got plenty to fill the small forward role that would make Ryan simply another Nicnat. But you’re entitled to your views. It’ll make good reading I guess when the FFC actually have recruited genuine superstars. All we need now is a superstar coach, right.

I said you can't get everybody but Ryan would be great if we could. A highlight reel hey. I think Son Son has a massive highlight reel. Rioli too and Betts to name a couple, but just highlights so pfft.
Could you name all these small forwards we've got that would be better than say Ryan or Stephenson, and if they're so good how come we always struggle to kick goals?

By chance I had a brief chat with Liam Ryan at the Derby. He is a terrific young bloke, and looks a great pick by West Coast. I'd jump at the chance to have him at Freo.

Ryan in 2 WAFL GFs was blanketed by our bloke, Nyhuis I think. And Nyhuis is no superstar. I think currently Ballas and Matera are filling those roles suitably but it’s all about the supply right. I hate to think what HB could do in the fwd line for us but that is a work in progress. Throw in Banfield and Cerra, where I’m sure one of those would take over Ballas’s Spot, we’ve got enough cover. Let’s not forget Giro and North who are building. But as many pointed out we’re 1-2 key forwards down. I’m not sure if our stocks will churn out a couple.
