My annoyance and anger is slowly subsiding. Unfortunately injuries and disgraceful, biased umpiring is beyond our control, but there are things that weren't and aren't.
i. The selection of Johnson as a support ruckman cost us dearly. He had no influence on the game as a forward or ruckman with two hit outs.
ii. Inability to deliver the ball to our forwards. 22 intercept marks from two players. Is it the midfield's fault or maybe our forwards just aren't good enough.
iii. Poor options, easy misses and costly turnovers. Why do players not have a shot when inside 50? You can understand young players making mistakes but senior players cost us dearly in this regard yesterday.
iv. Meek and mild Freo board. Oh how I wish the coach or someone higher would sometimes actually be outspoken on issues like the shafting we constantly get from umpires.
v, Our coach and his pressers. Would love to see some emotion instead of sounding completely bored and not wanting to be there.

I'm not as bad as some here who pick out individual free kicks each week Prince, but you only have to go back over free kick counts over the years, which has been put up here before, and no matter where we are on the ladder we always end up near the bottom and slime no matter where they are on the ladder are always near the top.
Yesterday just happened to ram home that difference.

Since you've posted your prism theory mulitple times, Prince, I'll bite: my problem with the umpiring was that it simply was not up to the standard of the match. Furthermore, two of the three umpires yesterday have repeatedly made it clear that they are not up to the task of umpiring in the AFL.

They are better than us. The tide will turn again at some point but until it does we may keep losing derbies in depressingly similar fashion. I think in general our effort and desire is better than theirs but we regularly get destroyed by their top players in Mcgovern, Kennedy, Hurn, Darling and even Lecras. None of these are midfielders. Unfortunately our best players are midfielders and we lack the kpp players to match them.
The last 6 derbies have been incredibly similar to watch.

Watching the game yesterday - admittedly only TV coverage - I noticed much of the ground didn't contain Jeremy McGovern. I think going forward, a cromulent strategy would be to kick more to those areas.

I’m still bloody annoyed. I hate losing to them. I feel cheated.

The umpiring was a disgrace.

We lost Walters and losing his run, creativity and passion was too much.

Johnno is a great bloke, has been a great player but his time has come we need to blood another one rather than play him.

But looking at it this morning the glaring stat was contested possession and clearances. I can’t beleve they beat us at the hard ball. Then I thought about it, we have great midfielders but we don’t run as deep. Neale, Fyfe , Mundy all held their own Langdon for a youngster was great. but then we have 4 first year guys in Banfield (who did ok on Shuey) Brayshaw, Crowden and Cerra who are really young and inexperienced. They weren’t at there best. But they will be better from it.

All in alltgeumps killed us, son son getting injured killed us, johnno was not up to it and we played 5 real young uns 4 in the midfield. And we lost by 8 points. Overall that’s ok not great, I’m still grumpy but it’s ok the storm clouds are lifting and the sun will soon shine.

Umpires being human (so I'm told) will often either give 'crowd' decisions or 'over compensate' and ignore free kicks to the home team when they should be paid. I think yesterday the over compensation was in play particularly where the 'holding the ball' or 'incorrect disposal' rulings were concerned. In a close game that can affect the result and have a demoralising effect on players who tackle well and get no reward while the other side does.

I understand my frustration at the free kick count up to halftime because no matter how you look at it, regardless of whatever prism you wish to use, the umpiring was disgraceful. The day after the event doesn’t really help much either as I haven’t been reassured - by our club - that those two whistle blowing chumps won’t ever be umpiring another Freo game. Ever!

Go back and watch the second half of the second qtr and then jump back online and explain holding the ball and incorrect disposal.
Also explain the 50m penalty rule. I for the life of me can’t get my head around how Darling can clearly push somebody in the back, hear the whistle and then play on to have a shot and that not be 50. McCarthy can be tackled and then thrown to the ground after a mark and then not be 50. Whereas Kennedy takes a mark and Docker attempts to punch and 50 is awarded. Don’t get me wrong the Kennedy one was 50, consistency please. Also if you are going to award 50 please give 50m not 35m as in Ballantyne case.
