Yep, despite everything, we never gave up and lost by 8 pts. I just can't wait for mcg next week, so I can put this diseased weekend behind me and pick up the broken fragments of my life. Bring in the Apeman!

I had a good day out, my first time at the stadium.

As soon as Walters was gone I thought we were toast. One down and one of our best at that, and the forward line totally compromised. So to actually be within reach of a visibly tiring Toast late in the 4th was surprising.

I went with an Irish mate who's been here 7 years and has got right on board, he's memorised stats about some of the rookies, fercryinoutloud... guys actually still on the rookie list. It's good to go with someone like that, enthusiastic and well informed but experienced enough in all sports to not get too dragged into emotion fuelled rubbish about the game. He agreed the umpires were corrupt.

As disappointing as it is to lose to that mob, I'm still reasonably content with where Freo are at... saw some familiar bad habits during the game but one down and chasing, I guess pressure does that.

I was surprised to see us beaten through the middle after assuring the Man from Cork that was where we had the advantage.

Surprised. It's a euphemism.

Losing a midfielder shouldn't have that much of an effect on your forward line.

Obviously the forward line wasn't an issue when we were getting belted in the second quarter but we wasted most of the first quarter buggering about with that whole, kick it over the top and run back on to the football malarkey. Then, when we got back on top in the second half, we went back to running it out wide and trying to bomb it long to the corridor.

Fremantle are the only team I've ever seen switch the play so they can kick it to the congested side of the ground.

Kicking it to the congested side. In retrospect, I think you're right. I thought we were just trying to stay in the shade.

The use of our once champion johnno into the forward line proved to be exactly what everyone knows.
it was more important to ross Lyon he keep his integrity of johnno being rested the week before and bringing him in to the derby. They went quicker we went slower.
The players were let down by the selection committee and ross.

Its that whole long bombing malarkey that has me annoyed, Shane.

It was as predictable as the sun rising and we know its not going to work against the slime, who do have good overhead markers. We needed to try something different but again, we didn't.

I'd like to think we will try something different against the tigers this week but again, i'm not hopeful. We have the players to do things differently. We've proven that against the weaker sides so maybe we should try doing that against the stronger sides

This is where the two teams scored goals from. Those goals the Eagles kicked running through the half forward line were the ones that won them the game. In the same position, we tried to centre it and waste the chance. Which is why we end up with a big predictable blob.

Any ideas what that something different looks like yeti?

Our best bet yesterday was to comprehensively win in the middle and run in waves into the forward line - as we did in parts of the games we have won. West Coast beat us at the contest then put on good pressure when we did have the ball. In those circumstances, with the forward line we have, there aren’t many options.

If it’s so obvious what that something different looks like, I’d be grateful for you to share it. Because at the moment you’re like that guy telling the DJ to ‘put something good on’ knowing all she’s been given by the host is a couple of World’s Greatest Beer Songs Cds.

For the record, that’s also my explanation for the song choices at the stadium.

Walters out was the difference.

Firstly it hurt our rotations on a hot day but mainly because he is not only usually good for a couple of goals at least but he is also our best kick into the forward fifty.

He plays the whole game we win.

Taberner, our best forward target, contested mark and usual backup ruckman plays, we win by more.

Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game and we need to be able to adapt the team structure and game plan better.

Yes Morgan,

as I've suggested earlier, we were on a hiding to nothing going in long and high. Going in short and high to blokes like McCarthy would have given him a chance to mark before the defenders could close him down as they did with monotonous regularity.

Kicking to the ground in front of a freo player, taking away McGovern's strength. He's poor below the knees. Put Matera across half forward, ball in low and have him them fight for it on the ground.

If the defenders move forward then go long and leave Ballas as a deep forward. Chop and change things around instead of presenting only a one dimensional approach.

You know, things like coaches do

We need to find a way to get the ball in the hands of Cera a bit more.
And we need to find a way to get the ball into the hands of Jonno a bit less.

Cera had 11 touches, Jonno had 18. If that was reversed, we probably win.

We didn't always go in long and high Yeti, sometimes you have no choice. Going in long and high is often a function of being rushed from midfield pressure. Bust it open in the guts and good things happen down the ground.

In a part of the game where we had a clear advantage we got beat. We were soft.

And I saw the James in Andrew yesterday. No way he plays next week after doing that. Weak!

The only way to stop those players doing what they do so well is have phenomenal control of the game. It was a naive point you were making.

The graphic shane has posted there is brilliant (where do I get it?). Pretty much every comment in this thread has raised one or two valid points; here's what I think: kicking like that, West Coast were very lucky (leaving aside the help they got from the umpiring, and Michael Walters going off hurt early). Fair play to them, they took their chances, but the shots from out on the boundary showed that our defence played them well. Meanwhile we took shots from exactly where you'd want to take shots from, which is nothing to be sneezed at.
