TOPIC: Forward Line Woes

If we're being honest here our forward line is still our achilles heel. We haven't recruited very well in this area and we continue to struggle to kick goals.
Tabener-our only contested marking option is out for 6-8 weeks.
Walters-our most creative and damaging player out for 6-8 weeks.
McCarthy-definite improvement on last year but never looks like kicking a bag.
Ballas-always tries hard but only good for a couple of goals at most per game nowadays.
Matera-bobs up for the occasional goal
Cerra-actually a midfielder who we're trying to play as a half forward but rarely looks like hitting the scoreboard.
Sandi when resting-I've given up

We badly rely on our midfielders to kick goals. Mundy, Fyfe, Neale, Langdon, Tucker. That's great but we just don't have the manpower up forward to match good sides.
Our four young new midfielders are contributing very little on the scoreboard either, in fact I don't think Brayshaw has kicked a goal yet.
About the only fit forwards at Peel are Apeness, Kersten and Cox. Apeness finally played a good game today. Kersten has been played recently as a backman and Cox really hasn't shown anything this year.
I think Nyhuis played as an midfielder/forward today.
Bennell-who?

Brayshaw just kicked his first today, was a good one too.
Agree though overall. We are one quality kicking key forward now away from winning those games regularly. Ive got high hopes for Hugh Dixon, he looks the goods.

I thought today highlighted how important Taberner is for us.

Taberner haters take note

The thing is half if not most of our players look like they just got out of high school, or even too young to leave home. (Which is commonly non- affordable)

But I thought they put up a pretty good show today despite things like experience and one-sided umps against them.
Next week will be testing, challenging. and well I'm just not looking forward to it. They ( Richmond) need to be smashed like they smash everyone else!

I agree all 4 midfield newbies look a bit tired and perhaps aren't contributing as much as a midfielder could, CA , but we gotta be realistic where they are at in their journey.

They have all knocked up about 15 disposals a match, and yep, made some mistakes and maybe not have impacted scoreboards too much. But all in all, they've done some good things occasionally, are not injured after 5- 6 big games, and are gaining valuable experience.

I thought Brayshaw needed a spell about 2 weeks ago, but I now reckon we stick with him and let him work through things. Applies to the other 3 as well. Crowden and Cerra did some good things today - as did Brayshaw - but just went missing a lot. Thought Banfield probably played his worse one for us today, but geez, his previous 5 have been bloody good!

As long as they are physically handling it, then let's get them up to speed as quickly as we can. I don't think - excepting Hughes - there's too many alternatives to come in for them, that 'progresses' our team.

I'd rather us lose, knowing the future is potentially better, rather than losing using players we know aren't gonna be at the table when this group do start being ' top four competitors'.

When that is, depends upon the coach and his game plan, rather than the 4 newbies, I reckon...

For what it's worth, we had more marks inside 50 than the Eagles, and had roughly the same efficiency for our forward entries (both teams scored on every second forward entry, which is about average), despite West Coast having actual tall forwards to kick it to. We had roughly the same intercept marks, and the same number of turnovers. Our disposal efficiency was better.

We didn't lose because we kicked it to McGovern. We lost because we got smashed in the middle (centre clearances 8-17, overall 31-44).

We got smashed in the tough stuff by blokes like Shuey, Mastern, Redden, Yeo and Gaff. That's a disgrace, and if I was Lyon I'd have that stat on the midfielders lockers tomorrow.

Thank you Morgan. Every team in the AFL (WC included) complains about the number of intercept marks in attack. Luke Ryan takes a fair few for us normally. But it was the number of times they won it out of the middle, and Dalgeish's whistle work that got them home.

Bingo Morgan. You’re an astute judge of the game. It’s the best game Redden has played in 3 years at the slime. But we needed more than just Neale, Mundy and Fyfe. Walters going down stuffed the rotations. The slime have beaten both Us and Geelong on the back of injured players. They’re rubbish and to think they’re second on the ladder. I’m fearing our trip at the ‘G’ next week. But I’m hoping our kids continue on this journey.

You can't keep saying a side is rubbish when they've only lost one game this year no matter what excuses you want to make.
I would love to be that rubbishy and if we were you'd be praising all and sundry not trying to find reasons why the other side lost.

"But I’m hoping our kids continue on this journey." You really are sounding more and more like Roly with every passing week. Meaningless spin.

Two things caused us to lose by 8 points.

i. Son son got injured. On a hot day one less rotation, plus he gives us run, skill and X factor in our forward line.

ii Dalgliesh and Margetts were a disgrace. It was a parochial umpiring Masterclass.

CA or have you got an alias. We got bend over by the umps, one of our best goes down and players like Redden and Sheed playing against some of our younger brigade in the middle. Big ask for the kids. Had Mundy goaled at half time and Fyfe slotting his, we win. But we’re a no excuses team. Though it’s difficult to convince you and your alias.

Jezza, I think that while our players are on the journey, they need to be part of the conversation and embrace it, as long as there is a level playing field, and I should add that they are a quality side.

I know we're a no excuses team but you still make plenty of them.

Yes I agree that the umpiring was disgraceful and Walters was a massive loss and we made some terribly critical errors.

Redden played his best game ever for the slime. Wouldn't it be great to think that someone like Sheridan could do that for us. But no you just keep trotting out how rubbish and lucky they are. Well 6-1 I'd take that any day thanks. You play against who's on the field. You can't be responsible for injuries.

When you make such wild and outrageous predictions they come back to bite you when they consistently fall over. They were going to be bottom four, we will make the eight, Brayshaw to win Rising Star, we'll beat Port, we'll beat GWS, we'll beat WC, Bennell will play 200 games for the club. I'm sure there's plenty more.

I think there are some positive signs. Our backline is the best I can remember and our midfield is strong but they were beaten today by according to you a bunch of crabs. Our forward line is still a concern as is our ruck set up. To be a good side we have to beat good sides and we don't look like it yet.

I don't like losing, especially to the slime but there's a difference in being positive and just being positive because it sounds good. There's also a big difference between acting positive and being realistic.
