It was patently obvious at the end of 2016 we needed to get younger, quicker and more skilful. Sadly MdB didn’t really tick any of those boxes. He’s landed in the best possible spot, being a team full of young, quick and skilful players. What GWS needed was some toughness and leadership.

It’s a good news story.

But for the sake argument, if he was still on our list, who out of the named 22 for the Derby would you drop for de Boer?

Well at half time he's had 19 disposals, kicked a goal and ranked as their fifth best. I guess you'd say a similar sort of player-Tucker, Brayshaw or Crowden. None of them get 19 disposals in a game, let alone a half.

For the sake of argument, as of commencement 2017 D.Pearce, Z.Dawson (ok, different kind of player, but still...), T.Sheridan, C.Sutcliffe, J.Deluca, N.Suban were still on the Freo list.

A few still are.

Mushroom, none of those guys are getting a game. I'm sure MdB could have contributed last year, but to what end? We sucked, and it was a good chance to play guys who might be in Freo's first premiership team.

Matty averaged 14 disposals last year, which is fewer touches than blokes like Tucker, and about what Brayshaw is doing in his rookie season. I don't think playing him ahead of Crowden or Banfield really helps us.

Good on Matt for having a good game, and it would be great if that's all the post was. But cherry picking one game and using it to stick the boots into the club is unnecessary.

Just be happy for him.

I'm plenty happy for him. I love this emerging Freo tradition of continuing to embrace and celebrate expats.

But he could have played that game for us, which would have been better for me.

You're right, we shouldn't cherry pick one game. He's averaging 23 disposals this year which none of those guys can match, whether you think it's right or wrong.
And who mentioned him as an option to Banfield? Just you.

And even if none of those guys on that 2017 list are getting a game tomorrow, Sutcliffe, Pearce and Sheridan have this year, and they and Suban played plenty of games last year.

Before today MdB was averaging about 20 touches a game. That's well up on his career average of about 15, and it's great he's been able to step up in the absence of guys like Kelly and Scully.

I only mentioned Banfield because when I look at our team for tomorrow, I'm not sure where we'd sneak MdB in. Certainly not in defence. He would have been behind all our midfielders. Could be play a defensive forward role? Probably, but that's where Banfield has been named tomorrow. Another hard-at-rookie from Claremont (as I don't need to remind you).

He could easily go on the bench, but I'd still be inclined to pick Brayshaw, Tucker, Crowden and Duman ahead of him given where we are in our development.

So yeah, it would be great to see MdB in purple, but I'm really enjoying seeing the young guys play, and of the old guys there's no-one I'd have MdB ahead of.
