GS, Gardener's arms were not long enough to "lay into Pav" Have you ever tried to throw a punch while going flat out backwards? It's not easy. Gardener was shown up for the cheap bully he is that day. And Pav handled things very well for a first gamer. Don't forget that he had the eagles "spiritual leader " of the time, rocket surgeon Jackovich, running backwards at one stage of the game as well, which is shown in these highlights.

That wasn't Pav's first game...

and I was standing about 10m away watching it. Gardiner didn't so much back away as flail so hard he sort of drifted backwards with the thrust.

Kills me that Dale Kickett is remembered for that game and not the brilliant career before it. Buried in there is the reason for his outburst:

"I was nearly paralysed seven weeks earlier, so I wasn't going to allow anybody to jeopardise my well-being."

And Ken Judge thought Gardiner throwing those weird "punches" at a first year Pav was fair enough and didn't set the tone?

Always have to pull it out:

I have always been angry at the heavy penalty handed out to Dale Kickett after that match. It was in the days of the Tribunal based in VFL-Central and the Dockers never fared well at that kangaroo court.
Kickett was, if I recall, given three separate penalties, totalling 9 weeks suspension, when really it was a single brawl. I felt then, and still believe, that they wanted to act tough by using micro analysis.
We have come a long way in recognition and celebration of indigenous players, but I reckon there was a big heap of racial bias evident in that case.
Yes, it was a big punch up, but I reckon DK was hung out to dry. Have we seen any 9+ week penalties since?
Coming near was Dean Solomon taking out Cameron Ling — the Geelong doctor said Ling would be out for decades earning Solomon (I think) six weeks and there was Ling out there again within (I think) two weeks.
DK - a great Fremantle hero.

He didn't have many games under his belt, GS, and Gardener was going backwards once Pav stood up to him.

I'm all for one of those bronze sculptures of DK taking on all and sundry in that game outside Cockburn. Well at least a massive poster inside the rooms somewhere.

I must have been standing next to Guy behind the goal square, and I can confirm everything happened just as he said it.

Gardiner had a scared and surprised look that he wished he hadn't started what he couldn't stop.

Now, if either of us only had a column in the West...

I'd like to see Glendenning get up to present the award and announce the winner is Chris Judd.

It could be his last go, may as well get his money's worth.

So, Glendinning needs to beat the traffic as well?

He would have to present it with 7 minutes to go in the third quarter Shane, so the eagles "fans" can make the 3/4 time trains.
