in Anzac Day footy. Surely the time has come to share the stage beyond just two (mediocre) clubs.

Richmond and Adelaide should be playing their GF replay today.

I think it's a better tradition if you keep it between to the same two clubs.

I agree. Sharks v Demons works for me.

Using that logic Shane, two up should only be played by the original diggers (preferably only the first two that played it).

.... and we should keep the Glendinning medal which has a history that is almost as long as the Collingwood Essendon match up.

Well one thing's for sure. They're not two mediocre clubs Stackson.

Wait, you guys watch the game? I just assumed people tuned in for the awkward military metaphors and the misguided conflation of the toughness required to play AFL footy and the courage required to go to war.

Speaking of poorly-named footy medals, the ANZAC Medal is a shocker.

“Oh, you won an ANZAC Medal, where did you serve? Oh, mostly off a half-back flank.”

The spirit of Brendan Goddard is a sight to behold. If there would be one bloke in the AFL that i wouldn't want as a team mate it would be him. Tosser.

The AFL has completely kidnapped the meaning of ANZAC and the RSL in Victoria has allowed it to happen.
It wont be long until all the kids coming through associate ANZAC legend with playing a game of footy..
Its getting to the embarrassing stage and I like you are going to tune out.
The march and dawn service used to be attended by a few Ess & Coll Hats and scarfs now it is covered in Coll & Ess colours..

Just some other examples I have noticed more and more :
Most communications this week have the AFL logo right next door to the ANZAC A..that should be a crime
The AFL have started playing a game at Villers Brettoneux every year now..
Only Vic based clubs seem to have any assoc with playing on ANZAC Day/Eve now other than a weekend.
Lists of fallen soldiers with footy links are only displayed for Vic based clubs - The lists seem large but no more than in any other community group/suburb/town at the time.
The Assoc of footy and war links is constantly talked up now, it used to be talked down.
Awarding a ANZAC Day Footy medal with ribbons on it is appalling.

The worst example was a article in the Footy Record written by AFLs Ben Collins. It was about Footys (AFL) Links to Victoria Cross winners.
The best they could come up with was a Collingwood Timekeeper who returned from WW1 a hero and worked for the club until his death some 30 years later and a more recent example of the next Wayne Carey playing for Calder Cannons who wasnt drafted and instead chose a military career. He was killed in Afghanistan and posthumously awarded a VC.
This should be illegal

Demo1, I find the changing face of Anzac Day annoying. It used to be a remembrance of not only the heroism of war, but also the horror and futility of war. Now its becoming a jingoistic celebration of military victories.

RR,

you must have attended a different Anzac Day service.

Its only ever been about those who didn't get to come home and that they have not been forgotten. Never met a digger yet who saw it as a good thing....and I've known a lot of them

I found the traditional pre-game Ian Moss concert touching.
