"Contact between Hawthorn’s Ryan Burton and North Melbourne’s Shaun Higgins from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. The ball is in possession of Higgins who was seeking to head down ground as he moved away from the contest. Burton comes toward his opponent and chooses to bump him. Contact was made between Burton’s shoulder and Higgins’ chest with contact also occurring with an accidental clash of heads. It was the view of the Match Review Officer that the Hawthorn player executed the bump with contact to the body and could not have reasonably foreseen a clash of heads between the players. Burton’s conduct was not unreasonable in the circumstances and no further action was taken."
Well, if you ever needed confirmation that there is now no onus on the bumper to ensure that high contact doesn't occur, this is it.

The translation:

"Contact between a Hawthorn player & an opponent .... was assessed.
The ball is in possession of that other player, who was seeking to .... win the contest.
The Hawthorn player ..... chooses to bump him.
Contact was made .... occurring in a clash of heads.
It was the view of the Match Review Officer that the Hawthorn player executed the bump perfectly ..... could not have reasonably foreseen a clash of heads ......
The Hawthorn players' conduct was totally reasonable in the circumstances.
Nothing to see here. Move along".

It's so hard to avoid cynicism.

Shiggins had the ball in hand and was in the process of handballing it off. A bump in those circumstances is completely reasonable and probably the right football play. What other option did Burton really have?

That's completely different to someone who bumps a player without the ball who may or may not be expecting it. In that case, if you elect to bump, the onus moves to you to make sure you don’t hit the bloke high.

You’ll see the difference with Thomas, who was sent straight to the Tribunal. He’ll have the book thrown at him because he ran past the ball.

I note that the Hawthorn element wasn't enough to offset how much of a clown James Sicily is.

Thomas will get the book thrown at him coz he hit a Selwood. We have seen plenty of those called "insufficient force" "incidental contact" and other weasel them out clauses over the last couple of seasons. But only when it suits the AFL. The Port player who hit Blakely with a clenched fist to the jaw, stunning him, in round 1 committed a far worse offence

Burton bumped as fairly as he could but, like lecras, he had the option of tackling and chose to bump. Consequently player concussed...and as much as I love the physicality, I don't want players being hurt in that way...not any more.

May I remind you all that Nathan Fyfe got two weeks for this.

And the club never challenged it.

And the coach never backed Fyfe in.

And the match-review panel chair said later in the season that it was the correct decision and would be the same again.

While I think interpretation is now heading the right way, the whole random perspective in this stuff is a mug's game.

Exactly Mushroom, we are always on the pointy end of the crackdown when we are the "bumper/hitter/tripper," but when we are the "bumpee/hittee/tripe", the MRP decides that the rule is too harsh and an adjustment needs to be made. The MRP is corrupt and needs to be called out. Get a panel in from netball, touch, rugby, or beach volleyball, but wherever they are from, get an impartial panel.

That is all Freo supporters are asking for. (well this one anyway.)

I think James Sicily is the beyond the pale exception that proves the rule, as far as Hawthorn players and a generous MRP are concerned.

Didn't the rigged trib used to argue that regardless of whether a bump was fair or not, if it results in injury or concussion, you're gorn.

Oh. Missed the bit about the Hawks player.

You all realise Sandi got a slap on the wrist for a high bump off the ball just a week ago, right?

Refer to the James Sicily post Morgan.

Don't count the ones that go our way, you won't need to take your shoes off. Count the ones we get shafted on.

Sandi got a slap on the wrist because he did no damage.

Isn't or wasn't the premise if you choose the bump and head high contact is made then you are in the gun for any damage?

Forget onus or duty of care, accidental or inadvertent- you're out!
