What a shame for him and the team really has done a lot of work to get himself to the point of being a genuine threatening AFL level forward. Will not be easy to replace, I hope McCarthy can back up his second half. Walters will have to spend more time forward similar to second half yesterday.

Good point Matebe, he would finish up with the 10 or 15 frees the umps ping Sandi for every week for "high contact".

More likely the umps will ping Ballas 10-15 times for ‘contact below the knees’ or ‘tunnelling’. Remember the umps hate Ballas with a passion.

Tunneling seemed to be allowable last night.

A darn shame. Would have loved to see him on the end of those quality inside 50s last night. He could have kicked anything.

Tabs will be a big loss in our forward structure... but we lose more from his "chopping out in the ruck" role. Pearce did ok, but the Bulldogs also went with 1 ruck and Boyd doing the chop out (& Pearce will be needed in defence this week). The toast will have 2 (sort of) genuine ruckmen and that puts more pressure on us this week than in other weeks. We may go for a smaller forward line & take a punt on Meek coming off the bench and Fyfe/Mundy playing deeper forwards when resting & put Sandi in the square when Meek is in the ruck. I don't think it is as simple as choosing the next best forward in Kersten/Cox/Apeness this week as they will need to be able to play their role in the centre square too... Match committee quandaries...

There’s 2 players that the match committee have to fit in our lineup this week. MJ and B. Hill. MJ is fit and rested so he goes back in. Hilly’s return is intriguing. It’ll be extremely difficult to drop our current 22 on form. MJ has loads of Derby experience and will be a great backup ruckman. He can match Lycett and he’ll give you a marking target in the forward line. Duman has earned his spot and we need to keep him. Can’t remember the last time we had difficulty fitting so many in form players in our 22. Oh and my money is on Crowley MK 2, to go to Gaff and end his night. This kid can play. I’m sticking with Brayshaw for my RS but how good are Banfield, Cerra and the nugget, Crowden. We’ll be chanting, “Who let the Dogs out”, on Sunday.

You struggle to fit players in every week.

It's easy. You'd drop anyone not as good as Brad Hill.

Its harsh, but you probably drop Tucker.

That is harsh as I'd prefer to have Tucker kicking to a leading forward rather than bhill.

I'm not that sure I'd bring Johnno back in.

Duman looks like a more than handy player in that position plus he's a little bit quicker and has a better back.

We need to be able to shutdown any space as JK gets a lot of his marks by running into vacant space. It would be very handy to reduce that option. We also need somebody tall and mobile to close down Darling. Pearce with get JK and like Wilson will get Darling or perhaps Ryan.

Where we need to make changes from the last half dozen or so Derbies is not kicking it high into the forward 50 because that just makes life easy for McGovern. Keep playing McCarthy deep like we did in the second half on Saturday but kick to advantage and just lob it high towards the square

It's a tough call for the selectors. A Pearce has been one of the best stories of the season, and I'd hate for him to be subjected to the random injurious flailings of NicNat and his less-talented thuggish teammate Lycett in the ruck. But if not Pearce rucking in spells, then who backs up Sandi?

The BOM has it being 29 and sunny on Sunday, so I'm not sure naming a back-up ruckman is the right call either, given West Coast probably has a slight running / pace advantage already.

I reckon Johnno, Cox and Kersten should all be in the mix, and the selectors should go with the guy with the meanest look in his eye during the week. They all seem like pretty decent guys, so that might be fruitless, in which case I'd select Johnno and hope to use him as a forward decoy/tagger on McGovern as much as possible, and backing up in the ruck.

Would it be a crazy idea to just bring B HIll in as a straight swap for Tabs and go small but ultra quick? Yes, I know it's a bit of a gamble going against the Weagles with just one ruckman, but we did look good on Saturday when Tabs went down and forced to go small, almost made us look for decent options rather than just bomb it in. Mind you, the Bullies were pretty much witches cones on the weekend, but I'm almost inclined to try something different in the derby, rather than give McGovern marking practice..
