Morgan, I would have thought we had an advantage with our speed. Exactly who at the Slime is quick. Masten, Cole, Hutchings, Gaff? That’s laughable. Fair to say that there’ll go in slight favourites but on what evidence? They beat the cats who had one rotation left on the bench in the last qtr. They beat the Suns who had a softening up by Freo the week earlier and had the long stay in Perth to boot. They beat the pathetic Blues by just scraping home. The Slime reminds me of the Steve Bradbury Winter Olympics saga. They’re on top because their opponents all came crashing down.

If you take the named centre lines and followers from last week's games, they read:

Freo: Fyfe, Mundy, S Hill, Cerra, Crowden
Other Mob: Gaff, Yeo, Masten, Shuey, Sheed

Guys like Fyfe and Mundy (and Neale for that matter) are great at winning the ball, but they are not the elite runners that West Coast have; and guys like Cerra, Crowden and Brayshaw are still building their tank being in their first season. The trade-off for West Coast picking runners would normally be that they lose the clearnaces, but NicNat can both ruck and disrupt at ground level, meaning they can get enough clearances to feed into their elite run-and-spread.

Having B Hill back in would help us a great deal, but one question facing the selectors is whether to pick more runners, or make sure we have coverage in the ruck to make sure West Coast doesn't get on top at the clearances when Sandi needs a spell.

I don't know which way I'd go.

To counter that argument, while the named centres and followers were evident, that’s not how it panned out. Banfield will go to Shuey. Good luck Yeo stopping Fyfe and Shuey is as slow as a cut snake. Langdon will blow Masten away and if Hill plays, well good luck staying with him. As a reminder, we smacked them by 60+ in the JLT. Admittedly they were without JK and Bob Marley, but 2x Hills were AWOL. Pearce will shut down JK, who’ll struggle like he did against the Blues. He’s coming off a LTI with no preseason. Good luck with that. To be fair, I think we’re better than an even chance to cause an upset, if that’s what many pundits are forecasting.

I just can't see the case for a Johnno return. We looked more flexible and quicker with Duman down back. And when has Johnno ever been a marking target up forward? Never. He is (was) great below his knees but has never been a great overhead contested mark. We cannot (should not) cover the ruck duties with a backman, we need our backs on deck the whole game. Maybe we go for Cox who is a good overhead mark and has some bulk to at least make a contest in the ruck. If BHill is not right then we wait till he is...otherwise a shame to drop anyone from last week's team.
