OK you got me on that one, but I , as we have all been when referencing the Hawks am talking about their golden years of 2012-15. And it is pretty easy to pull a statistical anomaly out and use it as fact.

And also, have they been flooding behind the ball in that 92% of the time?

RM,

I think winning 4 flags inside a decade lends a little more to your argument than taking a single game in isolation.

Not sure some on here would be happy to acknowledge that fact

My post was not a reference to Hawks golden years or even related to the quality of the Hawks outfit this year, the point was that the opposition have some impact on another teams ability to score.
This game was lost early because North Melbourne were able to win possession of the footy and maintain it and therefore dictate play and have a functioning forward line. A forward line containing Waite and Brown has at other times struggled to score.
If you have listened to players, coaching staff from the Hawks speak about the absence of Puopolo and Rioli in the past week they have spoken about the need to drive the ball inside 50 and lock it in. This is a legitimate way to enter your forward fifty if you don't have the weight of clean possesion. Minus the necessary finishing and pressure applied by these two players the hawks struggled to score from the weight of time inside their attack.
Against lesser opposition teams are able to maintain possession, have less turnovers and therefore have forwards get forward of the play and then lead up to the footy. When we have played well and scored heavily this year we are able to maintain possession spread the opposition and then create space for our forwards. Turnovers are the killer of any sort of forward structure. This is before considering what constant turnovers do to players confidence and willingness to run forward of the footy and work into space forward of the play.

DBTS you missed the memo - a win either means the coach went against the grain and told the forwards to stay forward of the ball or, alternatively, that the players ignored the coach and did their own thing. A loss is confirmation that the coach has focused solely on defence to the detriment of the team.

The fact that in our 3 wins we’ve dominated the clearances, meaning we’re controlling the game, is conveniently pushed to the side.

And some conveniently ignore the fact that when we play top 4 sides, we get plenty of the ball in defense and in the midfield, but we don't score because we have no one forward of the ball. When we play "lower ladder sides" the coach is prepared to play a forward line and we kick goals.

. A forward line containing Waite and Brown has at other times struggled to score. On those occasions, it seemed to me that Waite and Brown were getting possession backwards of the wing, not in the forward line. You fellas refuse to acknowledge that sides kick goals and win games because they play a forward line. Your argument is that sides win games because they win the ball in the backline and midfield. Look at Freo's stats in games against top sides. We win plenty of the ball. But not in the FORWARD LINE because we don't have one.

DBTS, I am referencing the Hawks and Cats good years of the last decade, because they won GRAND FINALS. You have not answered my point about their midfielder skills looking good because they have time and space to execute those skills, due to the fact they don't have 5 or 6 forwards clogging up the midfield, and the fact they are able to follow their footy instinct when they get the footy. The instinct to get the ball forward to a teammate.

Flag, a big reason why we dominated the clearances is because we had options forward of the footy so players didn't get caught looking sideways, backwards, or to the heavens praying for a miracle. They got the footy on the boot and forward.

RM your point here goes a long way to agreeing with my argument,
"On those occasions, it seemed to me that Waite and Brown were getting possession backwards of the wing, not in the forward line."
I don't for one minute think that North Melbourne want these players in these positions but they have been forced to "leave" their forward line in reaction to what the opposition is doing.
If we need to reference Hawthorn and The Cats then I would suggest they had some very high quality midfielders that possessed a high level of skill allowing them high quality ball use and retention of the footy. I don't recall and am not inclined to go back and check the forward line of each team but I think Tom Hawkins may have been one of them. One of the reasons we were never able to overcome Hawthorn is we could not interrupt their possession of the footy.

DBTS, you prove my argument then, I believe our mids are highly skilled, leave them to their job, and leave the forwards to theirs.

Tom Hawkins was part of those forward lines.

The reason the Hawks kept beating us was because we could not kick goals. See above because we are back at the start of the thread.

If your forwards are dangerous the opposition will put more focus on defence. If they aren't, they shift the balance towards their end of the ground. Ideally (hypothetically) you want four forwards that they need to triple team, you then more or less own the rest of the ground and get plenty of attacks. Teams defend when they need to. And it's not this or that; it's a fluid balancing act. Get better forwards and the problem is mostly solved.

Coaches might have some differences but you won't ever convince me they are complete idiots.

You have only had 1 or 2 coaches in your footy career then Jimb2.

(with no disrespect to the few very good coaches I had)
