TOPIC: On balance

The reason the Bullies "flood" didn't work, is that we had options forward for a change, and the ball was going in to the forward line faster than the flood could get back. It was obvious last night that players were kicking in as quick as they could and were prepared to kick to a contest. As I said above however, the forwards have to make a contest of it even if they are not going to take a mark. There were still a few occasions when McCarthy stood back and let an opponent take the mark rather than hitting the contest. They were the times we looked like we just bomb it forward.

You know what makes it really easy to roll off the contest and run forward? 100% confidence that some tall dude and number 7 are going to win the clearance and feed it out.

Sandi, Fyfe and Neale owned the bullies last night and it happened at the contest. Everything else flows from there. The young kids who we're playing as 'high' half forwards and our kicking defenders just streamed past every contest for a handball chain that led to a kick inside 50. No one needed to roll back for anything.

That's why our 'young' squad is a bit of a furphy. The engine room is still our experienced champs. I'm cool with that though - sounds like the perfect way to re-reticulate *insert building verb of choice here*

Cox for Dixon?
I may be wrong but I think Cox played as a forward pre AFL.
Unfortunately his form in the wafl hasnt been good whch will go against him getting a recall.

A tallish mid/swingman with skills ie a v.good mark with good kick could cover for Tabs in the short term
MJ has height but others can cover his loose man role - so it will be horse for courses.

I can't believe that some on here are surprised at how well things work when theres forwards IN a forward line, FORWARD of the ball......???!!!

And to be honest, whilst Tabs is a big loss (hes clunkin' 'em now, Yeti!! Absolutely clunking 'em!!..I am very happy for him and very unhappy about his injury....) it doesn't really matter who is down there, as long as there is at least someone - preferably several - forward of the ball.

Amazingly, everything ' flows' when someone is forward of the ball.

Who would have thunk it??!!

Hope the coach took note.......

C'mon guys are you all for real when we win and play well it is because we play people in our forward line and when we lose its because we don't have any forwards in our forward line. Am I the only one that thinks that maybe its because we are playing and controlling play we are then able to maintain a forward structure? For crying out loud this is so much easier to do against the weaker less organised teams.
Believe it or not there is another team out there that has some impact on the way that our team is able to play. Take the time to watch all of the teams that lose this weekend and how their forward lines appear to be dysfunctional.

There is definitely an element of truth in that DBTS.

What is obvious though is when we continually roll back into defence for long periods of the game we play into the oppositions hands.

What the opposition finds difficult is countering quick movement off our half back line, running it up the ground quick and being forced to defend against us when it is getting passed into our forwards accurately. When all our players are back and then have to run forward the ball is moved slowly, turned over or eventually bombed into our forward line to an outnumbered player.

The proof is in the pudding and we saw some good evidence of it last night. Of course I agree we need to be winning the ball at most of the contests for it to work but we should be bold and assertive more often given the quality of our midfield and half back line. Even when we are playing the ‘better sides’. Back ourselves in and we might be surprised just how competitive we can be against the so called ‘contenders’.

I know there is a lot of carry on about skills but from my observations, collectively this is the best kicking team I have ever seen from a Dockers side.

The use of the ball and handling in wet conditions was impressive.

I still maintain it's a home and away thing.
56% inside 50 efficiency was identical to the other two wins, compared with less than 40% for both the two losses.

I'm not saying I know what the solution is but identifying the problem is the first stage of fixing it. Maybe the players need to figure out when to hold the ball up and when to kick it long.

The positive thing is that Freo have had enough inside 50s to win most games so far this season.

DBTS, the most obvious stat is the one that says we have a very low goals converted to inside 50's. We get enough inside 50's to beat the top sides, but because our game plan against "top 4 " sides involves putting 5 of our 6 forwards behind the ball, we can not convert those inside 50's.

Our midfield is good enough to win the ball without having 5 forwards getting in their way. How many times do we see our midfield run into teammates against good sides. Get the forwards back where they belong, and let Fyfe, Neale, Mikey and co play 1 on 1 and we will beat most sides in the comp. (if not all of them.) The reason why the Hawks and Geelong look so skillful is because their mids have space to move into when they get the ball. Our players look just as skillful with space to play the game.
